Which one do I go for

Currently driving an A4. Nice car, does everything I need. Works exactly as it should and I like how it's been put together. It's a bit underpowered, but it really is a well made thing.

Been offered a MK3 Golf GTI 8 valve. In very nice condition. Not so well made inside as the Golf, but far torquier.

Can't really justify keeping both so would have to make a choice.

Pics enclosed of both cars - which one do I go for ?
Value of the A4 would pay for the Golf.

Keep the Audi... Mk3 Golfs are the worst!

I've had 2 A4's. Boring to drive, but very solid. I suppose you can justify the 4wd where I live because of the snow, but I don't use mine to it's potential, although I can slip and slide it around nicely on the ice. I would consider the VW a big step down though.

Which brings me to the next confusing factor.
Same person who has the Golf has also offered me this too.

What engine and mileage?? I've had 2 Alfa's and they can be a right royal pain in the arse if they've not been looked after - that been said I would have another but wouldn't buy a new one.

The Alfa is a 1.8 Veloce with 105K on the clock and full history.

Regarding the Golf, my reason for being tempted is the torque.

Much as I really do like the A4, 101bhp and 103 lb.ft doesn't go very far when the car weighs 1185kg. Overtaking means much gear changing.

The Golf, whilst no ball of fire, has 115bhp and 122lb.ft of torque in 1060kg. It has to be an easier car to punt about and keep up with the flow.

Hang on to I do a quick check of the numbers for the Alfa in Parkers.

140bhp
120lb.ft
But 1315kg.

It is very very cool though.

156 is a brilliant car, but it needs to have been serviced on schedule and looked after. It needs a timing belt every 36K regardless of what the service schedule says. I have a 150bhp diesel saloon with all the toys and its awsome. Have to say though, I don't like the estate version too much, but I supose it depends what you need. PS don't get a selespeed version, they are really prone to problems.
I'd keep the audi over both as the alfa offered isnt a saloon

I'm weird.
I much prefer the Sportwagon over the saloon and given the choice would have an A4 Avant over a saloon every time.

The good thing is that I have a choice of the Golf or the Alfa from a member of family and can have extended loans to help make the decision.
The A4 is a great car, but it really does lack grunt.

hi there
is the Audi petrol or diesel?

i am assuming petrol, take it to a performance chip centre and have it remapped,£250 later it will be a differant car and be more ecconomical.

Zil,
Your not weird, well not in relation to car choice anyway. It's just we all have different likes and dislikes. It has to be remebered if we didn't think differently from the masses we'd not be building 7's.

You've got to have an Alfa before you can be a car nut, it's the law apparently. Even though they say it keeps breaking down... My escort did that!

I've had two.

First was a Sud which was great.
Second was a 145 boxer which wasn't.

Apparently I'm taking the Sportwagon on holiday this year, so that'll be a nice test drive.

Keep the Audi.

Known to you, reliable, not going to cost anything to change.

So overtaking is a bit of a pain. It's not the end of the world.

The Alfa will need fettling and the likelyhood is that the Golf has seen some action too!

Spend the money finishing the yellow beastie. That won't be slow to overtake!

Mike

When did an A4 have 101 HP? Mine was 2001 and had 170, and my 2006 has 200.

This one does.
1.6 throbbing litres of SOHC 8 valve lustiness.

It goes all right.

Sort of.

But there isn't a situation in which my mates base model diesel Golf won't leave it for dead.

Torque, oh how I miss it...
