belkin gplus mimo router
Hi all i am in need of a bit of pc help. i have recently bought a belkin wireless router. its all setup, i need it so i can use the laptop out the
garage.
only problem is if the house pc is online i cant get the laptop to connect to the net. and vice versa. im on aol, is there something im missing?
any help would be appreciated

U certainly should be able to. Which did you initally load the router info on to? Have you tried to add another computer, or reinstalll the entire cd?
You should be able to search for wireless netwoeks on the laptop, then just connect (assuming you have all the right login info).

the laptop works if the house pc is offline, and vice versa. i loaded the house pc up first, and the laptop is the wireless.
also the laptop works in my gfs house aswell as the house pc online as it should, so think its the router?

no just the belkin router plugged into a filter then into phone line. have i done it wrong?

Well if that is really the box you have - it has no ADSL modem built in which would mean that it can't connect to the internet on it's
own.
how did you connect to the internet before getting this?

Ok if you are connecting through the belkin router now - it can't be the one on the link - are you sure that's it?

I'm not convinced that box can do what you want. I would check with PC world to see if they say it can.
A better choice would be a netgear like
this
The belkin doesn't have ethernet ports for wired networking but relies on the USB port which is not really a network port

Sounds like the ADSL part of it is ok if he can get one with any PC be it the laptop or desktop.
And also sounds like the wireless part of it is ok if he can use the laptop via wireless by itself.
Sooo first thoughts are its not able to give them both an IP address, assuming you're using DHCP (automatic way of allocating IP addresses to
devices). Maybe the DHCP range only contains one address?
When you have one of the machines on and working (say the desktop) open a command prompt (start, run then type in "cmd" or find the
shortcut - apologies if I'm telling you how to suck eggs)
Then type "ipconfig" and paste the results in here.
Then switch the other machine on (laptop) - if I understand right this will not be able to access the internet? Repeat the above ipconfig command on
this machine and paste here.
I can then help you some more.

Agree with all of this but that router doesn't have any ethernet ports and as far as I know the router doesn't route between the ADSL and
the USB ports because the USB port can't have an IP address. The router bit just routes between the wireless and the ADSL.

Nothing to do with the router it is an AOL "feature".
You need to create & use different AOL user names or AOL won't let you log in.
AOL never do anything the standard web way of doing things -----

Ah I missed that minor detail about AOL.
Yeah they always do strange stuff.
Change your ISP?

It does seem strange that AOL does that!
IMHO, AOL is generally suited to people who want to get on the internet and might benefit from a little hand holding...
As others have recommended, I'd consider changing your ISP (if you are outside of any contract) and change to someone else. You should then
have no problem getting your laptop and other PC working at the same time.
Saying that, have you tried calling AOL to see if using the router is possible on AOL? You may not need to bother changing ISP at all.

thanks for the input guys. im useless on this pc stuff. i think it does have an ethernet port as it has the ethernet connection with yellow wire. and
as for aol i have different screennames and dont use the same one to log on at the same time.
i also said it the laptop works at my gfs house when her house pc is online and she is on aol herself.
im sick of aol its the worst IP i have ever dealt with, worst thing is i got another 8 or so months with them!!
i asked pc world and they said it would work fine and that it was a good one, plus it was on offer. my gf has a netgear one which is tops and never
had an issue with it.

A friend has recently tried a Belkin ADSL router (also from pcworld) which claimed on the box it was ok with AOL (as did pcworld staff) but it
didn't work. He called AOL who said that they didn't support Belkin routers. Anyway he complained to AOL who were very apologetic and
they sent him a free AOL router and gave him lower price, faster connection!
