I have one so I can say that it does have a std oil leak, though its not so much a leak as a design issue, it doesnt leak from the gaskets, shaft etc. it just lobs oil out through the breather.

I have kind of mixed feelings about mine it does the job but is a little noisy in reverse (but you can't really hear that above the engine/exhaust/induction) noise. Even in forward it does add a little bit of a rattle to the drive train as the straight through is splined(i guess) to engage and this has always had a little play. I had the first bearing replaced by quaife after 1000miles (£102) which isn't great so its important to keep the oil topped up to avoid this.
If i were doing this again I'd definately go for an electric reverse instead

Bit personal arnt we ? Bit of reading for you below.

Anyone ever had any trouble with one of these :
http://www.quaife.co.uk/Quaife-reversing-box
Mine is popping out of forwards gear when hot. It seems to disengage when
there's no load on the prop, generally at speeds of 60+.
Cheers,

don't worry that reverse
sounds like a bag of nails so does mine and I'm told that normal.
One thing to watch is the bearing on the output end nearest the reverse
switch. My bearing has just failed after 1000 miles with a well
balanced prop so just give it a check from time to time.

The driveline is really noisy, I was expecting some clunking but this
is crazy, under very low load conditions the engine surges a little
then over-runs a little causing nasty bangs due to backlash in the
driveline. The Quaife reverse box seems to be the worst culprit with
what seems like 10 to 15deg of backlash.

Yes they sell a kit, pretty much as you describe for about 30 quid, its
listed on their website, finally an admission that their rev boxes pi$$ fluid
out the breather!, think i may just get this as at least i know it will fit!

BTW Quaife said to me to use 75/90 synthetic gear oil 250ml, looked in
halfords today and they only sell part synthetic is this OK? if not where can i
find fully synthetic stuff?

Cost is not the only downside of the mechanical boxes. They also get very
hot and cause vibration and reliability woes unless you make a really good
job of fitting them and really understand your propshaft phasings!

with BEC 7's
> and one with a reverson gearbox which failed dramatically (after 9
> months use) on the M1 and the subsequent replacement lasted 12
> months. The other friend uses a quaife reverse 'box which spews oil
> out quicker than the exxon valdez and has serious back lash.

Still got the Quaife reverse box and just waiting to see if it spews any more oil over the floor !

I brought it & yea heard about the leaks etc but only if you overfill them apparently & yea i know a lot of people slag these off for power loss also ,but I cannot live with the car with no reverse where i live & i dont think as of yet there is a powerful enough electric version out there for what i need without weighing in more than the quaife unit + added weight of a larger battery to run it & extra wiring a small battery would fail under high current draw causing more probs ,ill see how it goes & if causes more probs than its worth ill go back to as it is now just got sort out props now

I agree, people should think before they post.

Its an opinion, we are all allowed one, wont lower myself to call yours S@@t, I'm happy to accept that like me you are allowed an opinion to. Mine is based on been around BECs for a while including racing them, in my experience most racers shy away from them not due to cost (if you can afford to race then the cost of a reverse box in a miniscule amount of your budget) but it takes another possible "fail point" out of the equation, to finish 1st 1st you have to finish.

Jon

so happy you found the 'exxon valdez' quote I hunted for it but it eluded me.

I also previously had a fr2000 reverse box which lasted errrr 3 miles due to a manufacturing error (no root raduis in groove)

this is why i'd probably go for a electric in future, infact I have been considering making my own.

cheers Pete
