Round about rules?...

some one (or many people) please tell me if im wrong but...

Unless stated by a sign or markings on the road the left hand lane of a round about is for going left (1st exit) OR straight on (2nd exit) and the right hand lane is for 3rd exit or i guess all the way round to 4th exit if your lost and going the wrong way?

if someone could let me know if im right about this or infact wrong and i shall tell you why i want to know

That is correct. But the road is full of idiots that just do as they "think" is right... or sadly just dont care

sounds right to me... Ironically, those towns with roundabout obsessions (Swindon, Milton Keynes) don't seem to teach their learners how to approach them properly. The number of people I see in Swindon taking the left land approaching a roundabout, and crossing all 3 lanes on the roundabout, then crossing back and going straight ahead never ceases to amaze me....

Unless there is a dual carridgeway the other side you can use either lanes if you are going streight on ....

But yes people do get in the left hand lane and then go right !!!!

seems to be worse when it's been snowing... there also seems to be lots of people with broken indicators.. either that or there just to lazy/stupid to use them !!!

probably think it's too much of a danger to put the indicators on whist on the phone.. might not be able to hear about what the hair dresser said with all that clicking in there ear !!!!

Rant over

well...there is a round about near where i live and there is always a LONG Q of people waiting to go straight on (2nd exit) at rush hour and 99% of people sit and waiting for there turn as i was doing yesterday
just as i pulled onto the round about a guy a few cars behind pulled out of the left hand lane in to the right hand lane, put the hammer down and cut me up on the inside as i exited the round about making me slam on my brakes to save the front of my car

I expressed my upset to this poor driving with the use of a single digit and to my shock the guy slammed on his brakes to a stop, got out of his car in the middle of the road ready for a fight

what was most shocking was that he must have been in his late 50's early 60's, was a bit sweaty and well over weight and all he kept shouting was that i should get out of my car so he could knock me out!

i though it was just the youth of today that behave like this but clearly not!!!

i did direct him to the highway code but he didn't seem to listen

What i would like to know is when the law came out that nobody has to use indicators when exiting a roundabout or turning right!!
Because nobody uses them these days

Next time, blow him a kiss and wave and say 'cooo-eey' and wink.

Aparantly its meant to work, but I've never had the bottle to try.

And as for roundabout etiquuette, near where I live theres a roundabout, most people queue to turn left, but lots of people go right the way round, which ADDS to the reason why there's a queue, if no one did it, then we would all move quicker, so there would be no reason to jump ahead.

There used to be one near us where they did that, I'll admit I did it as well, and it now has two sets of traffic lights on it to discourage it and it works so much better.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

so many peoples driving is just shocking, i speand all day driving (i'm a rep) and some of the things i see make me

its one thing to try and be checky and skip a Q (which i do not do i might add)
but to try and start a fight after you cut someone up doing it is just mad.
i was so angry when i got home my pi$$ was boiling!
I am glad that i was calm enough at the time to just beat him down with highway code rules and not get into a boxing match with him.

The Highway Code 184-190: Roundabouts

186
Signals and position.

When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave

When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
you should not normally need to signal on approach
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

This is directly from the highway code.
If you're going left - left hand lane, going right right hand lane, any other, its up to you as long as you signal as you pass the turn off before your exit and have time to manouvre.

Must remember to press 'post' so my entry isnt 2 hours late!
Hope that helps
Hugh

I think the highway code is different for flat cap Horn rim specs wearing Nissan Micra drivers, certainly seems to be with the roundabouts I use.

Totally agree though, roundabout lane discipline is attrocious.

I love roundabouts being an ex-bus driver who drove bendys all day

The best strategy for folk are pricking about trying to force past you is to simply slow down or just stop and let them squeeze past. Same applies if some is tail gating, pull over and get rid off them.

This has happened to me on a couple of occasions but the gentleman in question soon got back into their cars when i got out with my 6 cell Maglite in my hand.

That added to the fact I was a 6'4 an 17st open side flanker at the time

And on the second occasion I was driving my mini with my 2 mates in the car and we all got out and if you know anything about rugby this will make you smile we played position 6,7, and 8 none of us shorter than 6'4 and 17 st

being able to take the 2nd exit on a round about from either the left OR right hand lane as the highway code says makes no sense!
who has right of way when the two cars try and exit the round about at the same time on one exit?

also if you are sat at a round about waiting to 'get on' as it were and take the first exit to your left... if you see a car in the left hand lane comming towards you then u'll stay put! but if you see a car in the right (inside) lane and as the highway code says you don't need to indercate untill you are about to exit the round about how do you know if he is about the take the same exit you want or indercating to go 3rd exit??? because you won't be able to see if he is indercating right so the only way you can tell is which lane they are in, hence it makes sence left lane to be 1st and 2nd exit and right to be 3rd.

what iv written makes sence in my head

i had this situation happens about three yrs ago.

driving on bedford bypass heading towards m.keynes, approached end of duel carriage way where there is a roundabout, i was in left hand lane ready to take 2nd exit(straight on) a car in right hand lane ( the lane had instructions painted on tarmac stating right lane is for right turn only), both cars enter roundabout side by side, he cuts me up & goes straight on, i slam the anchors on, start flashing my lights & giving the bird, car in front stopped, big bloke in uniform got out of drivers door & came towards me, A COPPER !!
he starts having a go at me & i returned verbal return saying was out of order, blah blah, then another bloke gets out of passenger door & orders his driver to return to his car, the sgt police officer says sorry, i said not good enough, why should coppers get away with it??
long story short, i got a letter of apology from top brass in the met police, what was worse was he was a traffic cop.
then the police force wonder why the public don,t trust em????

I think that only applies if there are TWO lanes where you would exiting on the 2nd exit aswell as two lanes entering it.

I stress the "think" part of my first comment though

Ah that must be it! I often wondered why the public (that's every single person who isn't a copper?) don't trust them. It's obvious now, it's because that one person cut you up on a roundabout.
No, wait that doesn't make sense does it?

i once fell foul of an insurgent who i swear would've killed me if i had got out. There was murder in his face, no mistake! Tempting to just run them over but sadly everything has a consequence. Now i try to ignore bad driving, and just do subtle things to disuade people from bad habits.

My favourite trick is if someone comes round a roundabout without indicating that they are staying on (ie turning right) i pull out in front of them, not directly in their path, but close enough that they have to lift off or not accelerate. They must realise that i pulled out because they didnt indicate

hold up mrgrumpy...
i know what your saying but i bet alot of people on here have had a bad experiance with the fuzz, i know i have!

i won't tell the whole story but i had an unmarked car so far up the rear of my car i couldn't see his lights in my mirror... at the next round about i used all my 300 horses and gave it big licks... the fuzz waited for me to hit 75 ish (in a 60) and pulled me over, the copper looked over my car, told me my driving was sh1t and that he had a scoobie at home that was much faster than my car and if i wanted to drive fast then i should book a track day then he drove off WHY!

no no please don,t get me wrong, i,m NOT anti police, far from it, my brother in law is a police officer & we,re like two pea,s in a pod/best mates etc, ( i even do police line ups/id parade things,)
what i was trying to express was its incidents like what happened to me that doesnt do the force any favours in the eye of the public, unfortunatly one bad apple( on that day ) can have knock on effect.
that one person that cut me up was a traffic officer on duty, if i had cut him up do you think i would have got away with it? i think not.

You got it on the head that time Andy. You're right that it does the force concerned no favours and the officer should be booted up the arse.
I just get so tired of hearing throw away comments slagging off everyone because of one persons actions. Not just the police, in other contexts too.
No offence meant to anyone but I do hear things like that several times a day and then read them again in the papers, for what they're worth!
Oh by the way I don't know how long it was since you did an ID parade but the majority are done on computer mug shots now. Can't keep paying out for people to stand in a line, government cut backs and all.
