front light problem
Afternoon all
I've been reading through the threads and would appreciate some help fault finding to make sure I'm grasping the right end of the
stick.
At the moment I have my Sierra column(type that needs relays) wired up. I only have only one headlight lighting up on side lights and nothing at all
for dipped and full beam on either side and no relay clicking.
I suspect a connection for the side light issue but could do with some clarification on the dipped/full beam problem.
The pins I understand I need are
15 - goes to earth?
56A - main beam power to relay
56B - dipped beam to relay
56 - connects to 56 on other side of column
Is this correct? or am I missing something a connection somewhere that I don't know about
From there I there I take it it's just a multimeter test to make sure that I have an unbroken lead to connect to each fly lead on the
headlight?
Thanks for any assistance as clearing this up will really spur me on
Thanks
Nigel

as far as I remember.....
15 only needs connecting if you want to be able to flash... in which case you need to attach a seperate source of +12V to it...
56A - hi beam
56B - dip beam
56 - +12V
no earth...

Not knowing your loom, (some including the Sierra seem to have a split of left and right lights and have separate fuses for left and right) Left and
right sidelights should be connected in parallel with the rear red lights so if one goes on, they both do.
Not sure about the column switches but looking at the diagram, 56A and 56B should be connected to the main and dip relays as you say. But note that
the relays have a permanent +12V and the 56A and B switches connect the other side of the relay to earth - ie the relays are earth switched, not 12V
switched.
15, as you say, is connected to earth.
Hope this helps. If your car burns to the ground please let me know as I'm just at the same stage as you
Edit to add:
BUT: that is the way the Sierra does it.
I agree with Dave's solution IF you are keeping it simple and are not trying to replicate the Sierra arrangement. - confusing innit

Now I'm confused I'm using a Vicky green loom:madnever again)
The wiring diagram shows postive feed to pins 86 & 87 column connection for either dipped or full beam to pin 85 and connection to lights on pin
30 so no earth
Or as usual am I grasping the wrong end of the stick as usual?

85, 86 87 and 30 sound like a relay not column switch

sorry not very clear post
they are relay connections but they are all positives, two +12v, one 12v from the column switch connection and one to the headlight.
Bit confused about the relay being switched earth rather than positive, should there be an earth connection to the relay? if so which connection?
This wiring lark can complex pretty quickly when you haven't a clue what you're doing

loads of info on this on the RHoCAR forum - they mostly use the VG loom so can usually answer any questions you have....
simply put the sierra stalk works like this.....

The switched earth / switched live IS confusing. I've had a look at the diagram for the Vicky Green loom and it's so badly drawn I'm
not surprised you're having trouble.
I guess if you've gone with the VG then try to stick to it otherwise you get in the same mess as I'm in with my Premier Wiring one - at
least YOU get a diagram
First of all, I would get the actual lamps working so that you know that they're ok. Then worry about the switching.
There seem to be two relays, main and dip. The output from relays is on 30. feeding either blue and red or blue and white. I would take off wires fom
relay pins 30 in turn and connect briefly to battery +ve terminal. If your wiring is correct, the main or the dip beams will light
It looks as if the grey wire from the offside lighting switch terminal 58 is connected to a red wire in the VG loom: this should be the feed to the
side and tail lights. If you can isolate this from the switch you could connect it to battery +ve and the side/ tail lamps should all light.
