Steering rack clamps
Having just fitted the rack for hopefully the final time, I noticed that with the rack bolted quite tight,there is a gap (see pic)
Should I carry on tightening & risk over compressing the mounting rubbers, OR space with washers?
What have others done?
BTW standard escort rack.

In my opinion if you get picked up on it explain that if the faces were touching it wouldn't be clamped properly. You should always have space
before things bind and don't hold.

Think you will find that in the manual it will give a torque figure for tightening those bolts. Sorry don't have an escort book so cant help.
Sure that somebody will soon let you know though.

I don't think that the torque figures will help in this situation.
As this is a one off & the chassis pick up points are very different.
I cant rememer now if when I took it off the escort, there was a gap or not.
I doubt it.
It looks like bad engineering practice to leave it like I have shown.

Hi Paul,
As you can see from the pic my rack is onto 25 x 25 box (welded inserts, tapped).
Fully tightened.
The rubber deforms a little, but a rack has to be fairly firm or it would move when
you turn the steering wheel instead of the wheels turning, if you get my drift.

On mine, the rubbers have a lip that sits each side of the fixings - in my case, there is no gap, and the bolts are fully tightened using Nylok
nuts.
