Zetec Water Pump Q - Again!!
Apologies for bringing this issue up again. Having searched for previous questions/problems around this particular feature, I have become very
confused as to which water pump is the right one.
Here is an old silvertop water pump.
Zt_Water_Pump
All the advice, given in earlier posts, suggest that the Escort silvertop pump is preferred, because it turns clockwise, with the crankshaft, and can
therefore be driven by the alternator drive belt as per "normal".
However, looking at the example shown above, it looks (from the shape of the impellor vanes) like it should be turned anti-clockwise. So which pump is
the correct one (i.e. clockwise-driven)?

It all depends on how you are routing you you alternator belt and which way it will drive the pump. I used the GBS alternator pack that allows you to
use the original Blacktop water pump.
This is how mine is routed

The OP is fitting a Silvertop, the Blacktop waterpump is irrelevant.
When I ran a Silvertop I used the 1.8 Escort Zetec waterpump, Escort is the important word. On the Escort there is no serpentine belt to worry
about but you do need to get the correct ribbed pulley for the waterpump as well.

Thank you once again, Mr. Turner. Solid advice, duly noted.

Best deal is at Euro Car Parts.

You will still need the pulley (if you don't have one) and a gasket.

Thx Paul, so I'm guessing the pulley needs to come off a scrapper ??

Best to see the pump with the pulley, toothed pulley means the same way as the crank, smooth pulley means it goes the other way off the back of the
belt.

Mine was new from Ford but that was many years ago.
It obvious which is the correct pulley because its ribbed. Problem is the pulley was only fitted in the Escort/Orion fitted with the Zetec engine
which stopped production in about 1997 and also some rare 1.8 Zetec Fiestas which were produced until about 1995/1996. They are not going to be
common. No point looking in Mondeo's, as far as I know none used the ribbed pulley
But if you do happen to find one check if its got the aluminium stat housing, if its there grab it.
Best of luck. Round our way picking from scrappies is very difficult now since they are stored away from the public and stripped almost as soon as
they arrive. All the parts are on shelves and they rarely keep small bits that they are only asked for once a flood, they normally go strait into a
skip to be weighed.
Ultimately it may be simpler to use an idler arrangement like you have to on the Blacktop. Parts should be easy to source and fab and if everything is
aligned they work well enough. The one on my Blacktop has been trouble free for about 7 or 8 years now.

Great! This reinforces the conclusion that this pump -
Zt_Water_Pump
.....is the correct version, because it was fitted with a ribbed pulley. So why do the vanes appear to face the "wrong" direction
for the rotation? Or is that another incorrect assumption?

Will try and get a photo of the spare Escort 1.8 pump I have in the cupboard and post it over the next few days.

No need to switch, you just need to route the belt so it turns the right way. ST water pump runs off the back of the belt so an idler is required.
There some pics in this thread showing both types of water pump..
