shortening handbrake cable.

My mates robin hood has
failed sva on the handbrake cable,
he had shortened it with a drilled bolt
and clamped with a nylock nut.
the examiner has told him to have a new
nipple pressed onto the cable to shorten it
and suggests a place in durham.unfortunately this is all the info he can supply.
Has anyone had this done and can you supply details of where to have it done in the north east.

mk can supply new clamp on cable ends, suitable for the SVA and they are only a few quid

another way is to use these



if the cable is still long enough for it to double back, one of these can be used too to go through the lever

what length are you after? I have a couple of different length shortened (sierra) cables.

This worked for me and allows adjustment. Cost about a fiver to get local machine shop to drill the centre hole. Cable routes thru the bolt and then folds back in a tappered grove cut in the top of the bolt and a nut is threaded over the top...the cable would snap before coming undone so mr SVA was happy with it. Also means almost any cable can be used as long as it is long enough, and bar acts to balance the force on the individual cables. Rescued attachment 02620029.jpg

Go to the nearest yacht chandler. They can swage nipples onto cables for a very small charge. Mine passed SVA no problem

oooh, nobody here into old British motorcycles?

In the good old days, we* made out our brake and clutch cables by soldering the nipple onto the end.

VWP do a range of brass nipples or you can make your own by drilling a brass rod.

The secret is to have a counter sunk hole and to splay the ends of the cable out prior to soldering. Use strong solder not the soft stuff for pcbs.

Just for info guys the tester up there demands pucka OEm style ends on the cables and has asked in the past for certification to cerify the ends.

Andy, I have a good idea about making nipples that use a Rover setup.

Whippy, the tester at Newcastle won't allow clamps as you have shown (DarrenW knows this to his cost!).

For a Yacht Chandler try Storar Marine on the Coast Road.

Or there is Lloyds British in Walker. They have made up steel lifting cables for me before and have the gear to crimp an end onto a cable.
