Ever seen one of these?
scoobyis2cool - 31/3/05 at 11:55 AM

I've just been having a look through the Precott Hill Climb site and spotted this, it's got a 7 front end but covered rear wheels, anyone seen one before? Any ideas what it is?

What is this?
What is this?

I dunno but it has very unusual front suspension

Looks like a Lotus 6 to me

According to the Jeremy Coulter book the Lotus and Caterham Sevens, a Collector's Guide, page 11.

Lotus Mark 6 approx 1953/5

Ah I see, I didn't think the front end looked quite right but hadn't spotted the different suspension.

That's some serious positive camber in your pic David!

kind of front suspension with coils instead of a leaf spring...

they do induce alot of pos camber...

David.

Thats the car that chapman designed before the seven. Its front beam axle was a ford item split and hinged in the middle! The engine is a side valve flat top.

mangogrooveworkshop is spot on the Lous 6 had a Ford Pop 93e axle cut in half and converted into 2 swing axles. ---- same as front of Hilman Imp.

The other pic is another almost identical Lotus 6 but because the exhaust comes out on the right I think it has an MG 1250cc OHV Xpag Engine engine.

The car in the first picture with the exhaust on the left will be powered by an 1172cc 93e or 100e Ford sidevalve or a puka OHC all alloy Coventry-Climax unit.

According to the book I referenced, UPE 9 was owned by Graham Nearn and at time of print was in the Caterham showroom. I don't know if this is still true, but may be...

Must be a pig to get at the rear wheels if you have a flat .

Almost certainly the Lotus 6 owned and driven by Steve Cropley, Editor in Chief of Autocar magazine.
