This a paragraph copied from the Motor Cycling Club News of the Week,

DVLA RUMBLINGS David Malin warns us that the DVLA are apparently refusing to issue V5C registaration certificates to re-engined cars without proof of the engines history. Apparently the owner will have to give details of the donor car. This of course means if you have an engine you purchased not in a vehicle, or as we have engines 'under the bench' from vehicles long gone then there maybe problems when you inform DVLA.

Anybody fallen foul ot this?

Nope... did a change of engine last month. All DVLA wanted to know was the new engine number and a confirmation letter from a garage to say that the number was indeed correct.

People will then stop informing the DVLA

Yeah can see them building a rod for their own back if that is true.

Number from a scrapped car at the breakers yard?

Dear Mr DVLA,

The brand new engine fitted to my car was entirely built by myself, including all castings.

Unfortunately, this was a destructive process so the castings are no longer available for inspection.

I thought that the engine number was often a good enough confirmation of it's history, at least that's what my MOT guy always refers to for emissions info. Isn't that all the DVLA need?

I have 3 engines, one from a scrapyard, 2 from fellow locosters that have no previous history apart from the engine No.
Let's see how I get on when I register the recently rebuilt one, the only things original on it are the block and crank.

I don't see the DVLA doing this as above it would encourage people to not tell but it would also make more work for them. I know people who've driven around with an undeclared engine, My dad did it by accident once and only found out when it blew a gasget and the garage told him.

An untampered engine number should be proof of an engines history, otherwise what is it for? If there is no number then its dodgy, and I tend to think strong rules should be put in place.
