tilly819 - 24/2/11 at 12:10 PM

hi all

I am curently designing a midi and and looking at doing a fully elcosed cockpit
as such i am looking for a very highly curved windcreen similar to that of the ultima gtr, aquila CR1, bently EXP8 etc etc

any ideas???? as i have found that many kits that have nice screen such as the GTR and the GD lola the aproptate companys will not sell me a screen unless i buy a kit...

thanks tilly

Don't know if it is possible to cut something down like say a saab 99 screen?

someone on this forum in this thread uses a stratos screen, looks great

here is someone experimenting with using a rear window as a front screen, it's an american car so would be hard to get over here but shows the idea of using a rear screen up front

Stratos?
Not cheap though.
Lister Bell may be cheaper than Hawk.
Don't know if they'll sell spearately though.

There's a specialist called uroglas

A topic on Pistonheads...

Think mine uses a Lotus Elan screen. But its not a massive curve.

Not sure, but would it be dodgy using a rear screen on the front? different construction/strength/impact resistance?

A rear screen was my first thought when i could not find a good front one however rear screen are made compleatly diferantly and do not bare the nessary marking to pass IVA so as such are unfortunetly out of the question... real shame because iv seen some quite nice ones.

As long as you aren't planning to copy the ultima design (in which case I don't want to help), then I don't see why they won't sell you one, so I'd do this:

stage 1:
Contact ultima seller (even if part built) on pistonheads/ebay - 'get chassis number for HPI check' or or ask if anyone on here has one and doesn't mind you using their chassis nr
Stage 2:
Phone ultima - "I've just bought an ultima GTR, chassis nr ...... off pistoheads and need a new screen". If they still say no, play the irate customer....they will probably give in - give card details (for ca £600!).
Stage 3:
await delivery- simples

Well you could try it anyway!

Rear screens will "smash" like into thousands of pieces on an impact - I really think it's a VERY BAD IDEA!!

I was doing some locost magazine browsing in WH Smiths today........they had a classic car mag with a "Making your own windscreen" article in. Didn't see any more, I'd been in there long enough, but it may be worth a look.

E Type windscreens are quite curved, but also quite upright. Not sure on prices, but they will be readily available and comply with the necessary regs etc.

check out the elise, exige or vx220

looks like exaclty what your looking for and they all use identical screens no matter the version, so should be easy enough to get hold of
