wing stay mods - just checking my logic
Dangle_kt - 23/4/09 at 10:01 AM

Right, just got back from tyre place and tried to put the wheels on ready for the sva tomorrow.

The rears were a dream, but the fronts have a problem.

The wing stay doesn;t clear them... bugger eh?

So I need to take the wing stays off, chop them, and weld some extra flat in.

Now the difference in diameter between the old tyres and new is approx 6 cm.

So if I weld in a peice of flat making the each arm 3 cm longer, i'll be right won't I?

I really dont have time for the job, and the welder is at my mother in laws, and I can;t pick it up till late tonight! Guess its going to be a late one

I just want to do it right first time!

Yes, if the diameter of the new tyres are 6cm greater than the old ones then the wing stay needs to be 3cm longer....

Are they all made from strip metal? On the STM ones the lower parts are made from metal bar- this has the advantage that you can cut and sleeve them in some tubing. It sounds like you'll have to cut the strip metal and let in some new of the same size. Hope your welding is up to scratch, wing stays have a habit of breaking (should make it through SVA though....).

Good luck for TM! I think it's lucky to turn up for SVA with the paint still drying

PAINT!?

He'll be lucky if i;ve knocked the slag off!

mine is rod followed by strip, but I don't have anything to sleave the rod, though I agree that is a much better idea!

what hubs are you attaching to?
I have cortina hubs and had same issue....

I put long bolts and 1.5" spacers on the 3 attachment point to the hub, cleared easily then and no re-fabrication needed

dont know how the stays attach to other hubs though

That's no way to refer to an SVA inspector

i had wing stays from matt casavara aka OBP ala Old luego! i wanted mine removable so cut just above the wheel tops drilled a hole and then made an L shape bracket which was tapped to take a bolt and then bonded to cycle wings.
heres a quick pic to explain further.
hope it helps

Good luck for tommorow Andy.

You don't need last minute jobs like that !
