Now I'm not one to panic ….. but …

I've just been on the blower to Norwich to book in for a re-test, and Trish said ….

See you in the morning.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh

steve m - 27/4/15 at 12:02 PM

good luck, hope the brakes work this time

David Jenkins - 27/4/15 at 01:36 PM

That's a quick response! At least you won't have a chance to brood about the outcome for weeks on end...

Well they did on Friday.

I took it down to the local garage and they did an MOT on the brakes.

Fingers crossed.

Yay! Good on you, Paul!

Now prepare to do battle with the DVLA...

907 - 28/4/15 at 01:18 PM

Since I presume I send the paperwork to the DVLA, and that includes payment for road fund tax (ha ha)

do I assume that insurance is the next step?

Congratulations Paul

That is one good looking car. Enjoy

Paul, congratulations. I'm absolutely delighted for you. You must be over the moon. Your smile said it all.

Nice one!

Yes you'llhave to get it insured on the chassis number. There's a list of what should be sent with the V55 on the form. Insure it as late as you can as they often limit it to 4-6 weeks before informing them of the reg no (they'll often extend it though if there's a delay registering).

steve m - 28/4/15 at 03:21 PM

well done, it is worth the effort

Paul's carting it around on a trailer, so there's no need to worry about insurance until the DVLA gives him a reg number - no point in paying for insurance earlier than necessary.

theduck - 28/4/15 at 04:07 PM

Need insurance to register don't you?

Good point - in that case - don't know! You may well be right... it's been such a long time since I did it (eek! over 10 years!)

Need insurance to tax, presume that's what you mean?

theduck - 28/4/15 at 07:07 PM

Well in a fashion, yes, that is what I mean. you need insurance to tax the car, which you have to do when you register the car, so you need insurance in order to register the car.

Yup. That's how I see it.

The only thing is, if I take out insurance from say May 1st, will I end up waiting weeks or months for registration?

Thanks for the comments BTW.
Cheers

I don't think you do, actually, for the first registration. I didn't send any proof of insurance when I registered mine. In fact it was only on build insurance with specific cover to go to and from IVA, and without a registration can't be on the MID, so the DVLA can't have known if it was insured or not. It doesn't mention it in the "documents you need to send" IIRC. If you think about it, you can't get full road cover until you have a reg. number...

ETA well done OP

actually, reading this - https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-registrations - i think you are right and that you only need it insured when registering in NI. Very odd though as this means it is possible to tax it without insurance cover.

austin man - 28/4/15 at 09:05 PM

nope you have to tax it to insure it

dubzter - 28/4/15 at 09:51 PM

I tend to agree.
Having re-read the letter I had from DVLA (Danielle, Kits & Rebuilds) allocating my VIN number it says:-

Return this letter with;

Application for first tax & registration V55/5
Build up report
Reg & Licence fee
IVA Cert
Photo evidence & receipts.

No mention of insurance ???

Edit to add:- I've just spoke to Danielle by phone.
The car needs to be insured. She suggested, as from May 1st.

Cheers

So where to buy legal (cough) number plates.

Paul G

David Jenkins - 9/5/15 at 10:24 AM

I don't know about legal (cough!) plates, but I got mine ages ago in Sheldrake & Wells in Ipswich. They really are legal, but the plate maker's name is really small & doesn't look too bad (at least, it was when I got them).

Halfords make the name and post code the same colour as the background
I got a front plate off eBay, the square Jap plate with just one line, then trimmed it down.
