Hi there, well the other day my Mk Indy with Mnr paddleshift kit failed IVA due to not have an upper collapsable item, does the IVA manual state how
many items you need, as I've checked the manual myself and I couldn't find anywhere where it states one or two items needed
Here's the items I have not sure if any are classed as collapsable but if they are and the manual only states you need one item I may have to get
in touch with my tester to see what he says

The "collapse on the Sierra column is a) where the triangle bit slides into tjhe round bit( the other end of your first pic) and b) the
corrugated/ribbed tube bit behind the wheel, so you may well vae 2 aleready.
Intersingly IIRC a member here that recently failed (xcant remember who) was told 2 U/j's with sufficient offeset wrer supffficient

Ah I see, I was told by Mnr that the 2nd pic was the collapsable part that suffices for them
Sorry I got your pics confused,. You are correct. Your 1st pic is the slide. your 2nd pic is just the clamp, that is non-moving and your 3rd pic the rubber UJ as I understand is just for vibration and not a break point either
Sounds like I'm going to have to get a collapasable boss just a shame it'll space my steering wheel so far away from my paddleshift paddles

Those pics are from my car so I have all those, however I got the impression you were saying These weren't sufficient, so which pic would be
considered the collapsable item

I did try and and argue with the tester that when I had spoken to Mnr I was informed that the sliding triangle piece would move down in the event of a collision however my tester wanted an upper collapsable section too, but I was hoping if the manual only stated one was necessary then I would argue a bit more that my car meets the requirements stated in the manual
Well I've just read the IVA manual (I hadnt before) and as it reads to me, having ANY colliapsible part is good and adequate.
It certainly does not read that the wheel HAS TO collapse away from the driver IMHO

Cool, so from both replys it's looking like my tester either isn't upto date with the manual (he did have to refer back to it during the test) or he isn't following it, I'm not sure on my best cause of action should be wether to write an email/letter to the southampton test center explaining that after consulting the manual it would seem an upper section is not asked for
The column has to protect you impact from both directions.
So the lower section must be either collapsible or have enough offset on the UJ's to absorb impact from the front, so the column won't come
back and spear you. You have this.
In addition to this, in case you fly forward into the column, the top of the column/wheel must collapse. That requires either a breakable column
mount, a collapsible top outer tube, a deformable wheel or a collapsible boss. The donor wheel or an aftermarket wheel boss usually cover this.
I don't think there is a requirement for the min number of collapsible elements, but what the manual judges against is:-
4. The vehicle and steering column assembly must be designed such that in the event of a frontal impact at 48km/h (30mph) the rearward horizontal
displacement and vertical displacement of the top of the steering column and its shaft do not exceed 127mm. The vehicle should be assessed using the
material in Annex 1
Sorry to hijack this thread but linked to the column... There is a UJ that clamps to the triangular section of the column. Does this solely rely on
clamping force or it it pinned in some way?

We had the same problem.
Had this
Flappy modification
he wanted this
boss
so had to make these expensive paddle extensions
worked fine & passed IVA.
Took it all off after IVA.
To my mind it was an expensive overkill as we already had
2 collapsible sections.
sold the boss,
Could not sell the extensions as we made them for our specific paddle shift.

Mine isn't pinned, just clamped in place by the rivet one side and two bolts the other side. If it's pinned that would mean it cannot slide up the triangular section - see Figure 3 on P120 of the IVA manaual. It looks as though yours has been pinned and hence defeated the sliding part.
Apparently the pin is designed to snap according to Mnr
And paddle extensions sounds like a plan
On the UJ to triangular clamp early ones had a roll pin on one edge that located in a holeon the UJ side and later ones don't. It's not needed.
