problems with my donor....
Nightkid - 3/6/05 at 06:40 PM

well where do i start.......
i've got a mk2 escort here and i'm trying to remove the steering. theres four bolts holding the steering arm into the cross beam underneath. the problem is that the nuts on the bolt are square shaped and i've never same across a square shaped head nut before. is there a tool to remove this or i'm forced to get the grinder out?

my second problem is how to store the car once the wheels are off. i dont want to scatch the driveway when the scraphead guys come round to dispose the chassis. i was thinking of laying all four wheels flat and use it to cushion the chassis on the drive. i'm not planning on reusing the wheels anyway. any suggestions?

Cheers guys

Square nuts are usually captive mate so they should be welded on. Are they turning? U can usually get a spanner to it on them if they are..

Best idea for the body is to rest it on the wheels as you say or some blocks of wood or summit.. The body shouldnt damage the wheels..

my drive is paggered where the scrap shell was dragged over it recently, in the past i've laid it on beams to wood to drag it on. works ok.

better still is to scrap it with in reach of a hiab arm on the roadside, then it can just be lifted straight out

Once I'd finished stripping my donor we had it in a very small back yard up on four axle stands. I'd taken everything, including engine, gearbox, running gear etc so it was nice and light.

We then put a pallet under the middle of the floor plan, sort of under the doors. Then we lifted the front up on the trolley jack, pulled the axle stands out and let it down onto the pallet. Same sketch at the back and it was off the stands and resting on the pallet. Couple of ropes and big ratchet straps saw it fixed to the pallet.

We then borrowed a pallet truck from work, rated at 1000kgs and slid it under the pallet and pulled the thing out of the yard into the lane. The scrappy came next day and hey presto no donor.

Seemed to work for me, but I can't recommend it for a stack of Health & Safety reasons. Be it on your own head if you follow my stupid antics / advice.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Mike

P.S. Sorry no idea about the Escort Rack.
