bike carbs

Ive got ZX9 carbs, just building a manifold for it, i think it will be good investment, i am told easy to set up, and good with fuel and you dont need to make a dirty great big hole in your bonnet

I'd buy some modern technology (ie bike carbs) and then take it up to TTS @ Silverstone for a tune-up and a re-jet.
Jobs a good'un....

Webers sounds great but typically have pants fuel economy and unless tweaked to perfection don't actually give as much power as they sound like they do
Still love the sound though!!

Im not qualified to say what is best as ive not had the pleasure of comparing both. The bike carbs are working well on my pinto.

bike carbs seem the way to go, i couldnt believe how easy they were to get sorted. ive got zx6 carbs on a tuned 1600CVH which are 38mm choke.
bike carbs operate on a fairly low fuel pressure of about 3psi, i fitted a standard (carbed) electric bike fuel pump just below the tank which incorporates a self-pressure regulator.
for me the main fuel jets need to be enlarged from the existing 135’s to something in the region of 165’s to start with. It is suggested they can be drilled to enlarge but I brought a set of four at £4 each.
The engine had never been run since its tuned rebuild and started first time after a quick squirt of easy start, ticked over and revved freely!
As part of the upgrade, I had also fitted a lambda sensor into the exhaust manifold and brought a magic box to monitor and indicate the fuel/air mixture, which indicated it was running too rich. (so did the 15mpg I initially got!).

With the aid of the fuel/air monitor i continued to tweak the fuelling, its now running with an air box, smaller 150 main jets (for full throttle fuelling), needle jets position 2 of 5 (mid range) and air screws two turns out (tick over fuelling) which seems to suit my engine and pulls strongly. Bike carbs are en vogue at the moment as they are a cost effective solution to a multi carb set up, but it still has to be said that a good set of well tuned webers will be perfectly comparable. Webers get bad press as so many people try and run badly set up or worn ones. Bike carbs score as generally they have done fewer miles and less work so for little cost are as good as new.

I like the ZZR1100's on my pinto as it was a good step upfor me for not a lot of money (Boggs manifold etc). Boggs did a great job of tuning them up.

The downside to bike carbs is that they dont sound quite as good as webers (my oppinion of course) and the choice of places to take them for tuning is a bit limited (then try finding someone who a. will work on an old engine, b. will touch bike carbs, c. will then also touch megajolt!!!!).

I guess what i would say is that one is not 'better' than the other as such with all thing considered but one may suit your pocket / application more than the other. Performance wise - not much in it. Cost - depends how canny you are when buying the bits, bike carbs can be cheaper.

ZZR1100 carbs will probs be a bit big for you. ZX6 sound like a good plan. What plans do you have for sparks? If you may go mappable at some point then you can either find carbs with TPS built in or go MAP. just pointing this out as it may narow your search and make future mods easier.

bike carbs arent really any cheaper imo, I considered changing from 40s to bike carbs and worked out the following:

carbs (getting pricier now): £60
manifold: £120
fuel pump/regulator: dunno
megajolt: £150 (optional tho)
setup: ? (£100-200 Id imagine)

compare to 40s:

carbs: £150-200
manifold: £50
fuel pump/regulator: £50
setup: £50

just off the top of my head, obviously if making your own manifold and DIY setting up it would be cheaper.

you can take a pinto/crossflow with webers to any rally man and he will set them up for you.

I have bike carbs on a pinto and not far from you if you want a look, send me a U2U. You can rejet them up intially with a suitable size drill! or weber dgav/dgas main jets fit mikunis.

you can buy main jets for motorbike carbs from any bike tuner with a dyno, mine cost me £4 each, just seemed better as you want to start rich then get smaller which is always hard with a drill!!

BIKE CARBS
To rejet bike carbs just drill them out. On my set up I had to drill them out to 1.7mm thats on a 2.1 pinto. All you need to do is buy a set of carbs original electric fuel pump of the bike, then make a manifold and jobs a good un. If you look in my photo archives under ZX9R carbs this may help you. Jacko
