Mating brand new Zetec to Type 9
Hi guys,
This is my first question on the site. I've just bought a brand new Ford 2L 16V Zetec Black Top engine and I'm wanting to fit my Sierra
type 9 gearbox. The bell housing fits to the engine although only 5 bolts line up and the opening where the starter motor goes is completely blocked
by the upper part of the alloy sump. Does anybody know if I would need to either change the sump or get a different bell housing, if so, what type
would it be? Also would I need a different starter motor? My old engine was a 1.6 pinto and the starter motor was located bottom right if looking at
the engine from the front. On the Zetec the only place it appears to go would be on the top left under the inlet manifold.

1) Need a starter from a CVH Sierra
2) Would recommend a lightened 1.8 flywheel/clutch assembly from Dunnell or similar
3) you'll probably want to shorten the sump. On the blacktop you can do this yourself - look at gallery.cantcatchme.net for my solution.

Erm, you need to cut a little of the plate but it should be a great fit, using the sierra starter and i used a pinto clutch.
Built, Ivaed, Drove and now Sold - 2011 MNR VORTX RT+ 2000cc Zetec on R1 Throttle boddies.

PS the starter goes in the lower passenger side position wrt the engine. You'll need to angry grind the fins off the sump casting.

Hi Russ. There is two options with the starter motor as I understand. One is to grind away the sump casting where it fouls the starter. Apparently
there is still plenty of meat there. The other is to get hold of an RS2000 belhousing which has a hole for the starter on the other side.

Thanks for your info.
I thought I would probably have to modify the sump by cutting some off but I was relectant to start hacking bits off my lovely new engine!!
I think I'll stick with the existing bell housing and I'll add some extra supports to anchor the bottom like it was on the pinto.
Does anyone have a photo of a CVH Sierra starter because I mat actually have some in my shed (my mum used to own a motor spares shop)?
Is this starter used because of the different position of the ring gear in respect to the engine block compared to the one on the pinto engine? If so
I may just make a spacer to move the starter slightly forward so the gear will line up.

Yes Russ you are correct. The CVH starter is used because of the ring gear spacing from the block. A spacer (6mm I think) can be used with a Pinto
starter.

I just took a pic of my cvh starter freshly removed from the donor car, hence still needing a clean
