Caterham flywheel to 1.8 kseries help needed

Probably one for britishtrident, but if anyone else can help i'd appreciate it.

I have a 1.8 k series engine from an elise. I have a bellhousing from caterham which allows a type 9 gearbox to be fitted. The problem is that the 1.8 flywheel is too large for the bellhousing.

I have recently purchased a caterham flywheel as this will fit the caterham bellhousing. The caterham flywheel derives from a 1.6 k series (as I understand it) the thing is I have taken the 1.8 flywheel off the block and compared it to the caterham flywheel and noticed that the timing marks are different.

So will this be an issue or do I need to somehow match the timing marks?

The engine ECU is individually coded to the flywheel reluctor ring and the security imobiliser ecu.

Using Rover Testbook (or equivalent software) the engine MENS ecu can be introduced to the new flywheel reluctor ring and/or a different security ecu.

I presume you got the engine ECU with the engine ? not sure which version of MEMS would come with your engine, I think it might be a MEMS 2.xx version, which many electronic injection specialists can reprogram for you.

MEMS 3 has significant differences and major differences between versions used in different applications, hence any MEMS 3.xx version is more of a problem to deal with ...


Incidentally any old Rover 214/414 flywheel would have worked you could probably bought a whole running 214Sei for what Cateringvan. charged for post and packing.
With a running 214Sei you could have used the MEMS ECU wiring harness and security ecu to get the car running, then sorted out the fueling later.

The otherway round it is to use a Megasquirt or Emerald ECU

One other thing the ignition flywheel sensor was on the inlet of the engine on 1.4 and 1.6 engines and the exhaust side of the engine on any 1.8s I have worked on.

It might be an idea to aquire a whole scrap 1.4 or 1.6 and associated parts.

that was quick britishtrident!!

The engine is a 1997 elise k series. It has 0 miles on it as it was swapped for a vhpd engine.

The ecu and 5as module I have is also from another elise from 1997.

The flywheel and pressure plate only cost me £50 inc delivery form ebay and it's a brand new unused unit. I reckon I got a bargain.

The sensor on the 1.8 block I have appears to be on the inlet side. (thats if i'm looking at the correct part)

Anyway if this info helps with a solution please let me know. I feel that I have spent a load of cash on trying to get this k series engine fitted and I am still no further to getting it in the car.

I believe the only solutions are as BritishTrident already mentioned, either get your MEM's ECU re-coded to suit the 1.4/1.6 flywheel or use an third party ECU. A loom adapter can be bought for the Emerald ECU to make it a straight plug in swap with MEMs, lots of Elise owners have trodden this path.
