Making your own expansion bottle
I would like to make my won stainless expansion bottle.
Does anyone has a good source for the needed stainless pressure relief cap / threaded tube needed on it?
Also how much of % of air does need to be in it? (in that way i can be sure the level is the hihgest of the system etc.
Tks

what can you possibly gain by doing that?
bottles in various sizes are avaialable on cars; they are marked with max/min marks, come with the correct cap and fittings tubing and are transparent
so you can very easlily check the level - how will you do that - make a dipstick?
sorry - doesn't answer your question but seems a little bit pointless, you must have a lot of spare time .....

There aren't too many production cars with stainless are there!!!
Quite a few people have non-production car stainless ones.
Oh, and you can always fit a sight glass is necessary!
Cheers,
James

just because you can make it doesn't mean you have to, still you haven't answered my question as to the advantage of doing that
and how many posts ?

I could'nt source a stainless neck, so i used a brass one, brazed into a plate, that I bolted to the tank with a gasket.
Why did I make one? - all header tanks were metal in the 60's

Its easy enough to check the level in a stainless or ali header tank, you just take the cap off!
You can buy weld on radiator necks from several places, try a google search for 'weld on radiator neck'.

mhhh
my idea of level check was with 2 neumatic rapid fittings and a bit of neumtic
transparent tube..
temperatures could be a point.
The reason wy i like to build over to buy is simple
it costs me less money and less time if i build then if i go to the scrap buy one clean it and still have only a bad plastic thingly with strange
forms...
i work for a stainless steel fabricator
with 8 Tig sets etc. etc. etc.
I only need 200mm of 100mm Tube
and a bit of sheet and a beer for the tig guy (if i donīt wat to do it my self)
and offcourse 1neck + cap wich if i donīt find could latheup (stil need the cap)
Wich pressure would be good for a bike engine??
TKS
the material isnīt stated on the website of the neck!!
cant weld alloy

don't think so; form before function I say.
blingy tank isn't going to make you go faster and weighs more too.

Coming from the bloke that wants to make stainless studs instead of buying them?
It's the same principle, he wants to save himself Ģ50-60, you want to save yourself a Ģ5
It's the wanting to and having the ability to do something yourself. I don't have the ability to I bought it all.

oooh!!
I'm not going stainless.
I'm making the studs as I am not aware of them being available in unc/metric. Granted I could just use the stock unc/unf.
That isn't bling, it is just practical.
The blingy bottle is just that - bling; no advantage over a plastic one; millions of production cars seem to prove that.

how mcuh crap do you get in a plastic bottle then? how often do you need to clean it? mounting can always be made.
but as yoiu say, you have access to the equipment and materials (probalby get it for free so why not?
I am not against it, by all means do it.

i get your point
but its just the fact that i have acces to material.
Also the time spent on making a strange support i spent on making a nice SS thingy. with a simple mounting wich suits my needs...
in fact i murder 2 flys with one attempt
also the current one has a leak and the mounting is sucks

Go for it, if you want to have a shiny expansion tank. Cheap alternative is to use a RangeRover Classis expansion tank, its made from copper, then
have it chromed ! It also mounts laying down rather than upright which might prove useful in choosing a location.
"just like that !"

You mean one like this on my car:
header tank 1
yes, I consider it nice, and it looks much better than a used plastic crap one, and it has the outlets, inlets and brackets exactly where they needed
to be in order to save any unecessary pipework (i.e. there is NO water piping further back than level with the no. 2 spark plug of the engine)
My mate Clive had a load of 316 stainless necks made (CNC turned) to suit GM pressure caps as used by bailey tanks etc.
Unfortunately he has sold them all and not had more made yet.
I can get the thread dims off him and you can get a machine shop to turn one for you.

just to add, I did a web search and looked in some obvious places but nothing.
you may be able to find a broken Baileys tank or try some industrial stainless steel tank manufacturers but then what thread do you need?

yeah
mostly alloy out of there..
in fact i donīt mind aslong as its universal or comes with the cap.
last thing i can do is do the trick like states above. Yamaha fazer 600 neck is in my vision with 2 bolts and some WURTH high temp (until 350degrees)
silicon
options:
- ns dev specs and lathe up something
- normal cap and lathe up a normal border
- fazer 600 neck bolting

PS even the bolt that holds the tank on does two jobs, its the bolt that holds the removable chassis diagonal in as well!!
Will get the dims this weekend for you

to have min and max read on the bottle?

i had one build my self but the employees thought different about that! they said it wasnīt ace enough. now they are making a bling bling one..

No, no need for max min on anything, I haven't. I also have a custom stainless tank for may brake and clutch fluids and there is no slight level
on that, just a level sensor built into to side of the tank.
