Oil system plumbing

I've just received my stuff to fit an oil cooler. The remote head is marked in and out but the sandwich plates (thermostatic one for between the remote filter and filter / normal one for take off from engine) are not. Can some enlighten me before I plumb everything in back to front.

thanks

ps what do I use to seal the 1/2 BSP fittings with, it looks like I may need some o rings, but do the threads need ptfe on them ? Rescued attachment sanwich.jpg

1/2 dowty washers / bonded washers to seal union to head

Thinking about it now it shouldn't matter as the cooler is bi-directional???

However, went through the same head scratching when fitting mine and had the same problem - Can't remember which port is which now but the way I worked it out was to look at the Haynes manual (which should have an expanded diagram of the oil circuit), from that work out which way the oil flows through the filter and then by looking at the sandwich plate ensure that you put the cooler after the filter (filter works better with nice hot oil).

Worked for me

If you look inside the filter itself, you'll see that behind the small peripheral holes (rather than the large one which screws onto the stub) there is a rubber disk which acts as a one way valve.

So, oil goes into the filter through the small holes and back into the engine through the large threaded portion in the middle.

From there you can work out the rest of your take off routing etc.

With regards to the sealing of the 1/2" BSP's, as said above they seal onto the housing using a rubber bonded to steel washer, but the connection to the hose should be a tapered fitting to match the 1/2" male/male into the takeoff.

I put ptfe on the threads just because you do, no idea if it needs it.

I'm more worried about the push on hoses which mocal supply, can't see how they'll stay on once hot. But they are supposed to!

Generally if the threads are tapered then they were designed to provide the seal so fit PTFE tape. Parallel threads will either seal on a washer/o-ring or will have a taper at the end which seals against an opposite taper in the socket. Not a 100% rule as there's so many standards now!

just to reiterate.
1. seal with o-rings or dowty washers
2. oil cooler inlets/outlet to be uppermost
3. oil cooler AFTER filter
4. oil returns via central tube (i.e. centre of filter).
5. if fitting take off plate to remote, oil will go via cooler before filter (bad MOCAL design IMO)
6. cosider fitting thermostat
