if you have the room in your engine bay you can put nearly any engine in you want

A Zetec would be fairly easy.

I gas flowed a 1800CVH head and increased the CR to 10.5:1 for a mates Sierra.
He was well chuffed with the result - it went faster and was more economic when not standing on the loud pedal.
I *think* it would be possible to fit a cam from something with a sporty 1600CVH to get even more poke.
Coupled with bike carbs there would be a huge difference in power.

it all depends on how much money you want to spend

Mine is totally standard - I haven't done my SVA yet to I don't know how quick it will be.
I had an email discussion with a guy from Ferriday engineering [they do a lot with CVHs] who reckoned bike carbs and a slightly raised CR would give
around 120 BHP.
He also said that he didn't think it was worth spending much on the CVH head as it would never be great.
I had originally planned to do stuff with the CVH, but my plan now is to fit a 1.8 Zetec with bike carbs at a later stage as the engine is more
powerful, smoother, stronger and a bit nicer to look at.
The Zetec will be a fairly easy swap for the CVH, the only complicated thing being the ignition, for which I'll use a Megajolt.
Stu
ps the guy from Ferriday said a turbo installation on the CVH would be easy - the 1.6 head on the 1.8 block gives a suitable CR for a turbo so this
could be a cheap way to lots of power.
Personally I prefer normally aspirated engines so didn't fancy this route for myself.

Mine has gas flowed head , 1mm skimmed off , Megajolt ignition + bike carbs ( as i told AndyHarding) .
Goes quite well ,and did not embarrass itself at a Brands Hatch trackday with Elises ,Vx220's etc
You can,t use any other UK cvh cams ,the journals are a different size.
You can replace the pistons and then use all the 1600cvh tuning option together with the head.
You may be able to get a cam from the USA that will fit as the 1800cvh is based on the American cvh.
Mike Tanski at Ferriday Engineering does lots of stuff for CVH.
As the head is quite badly flowing Turbo could be an option but you would have to drop the compression.

thanks for all this it sounds more promising. if i get all the parts from brakers and ebay are their garages out their that would put in in and set it
up. i dont want to spend mega bucks fut a little project over the winter is ok. the other idea was to put a rover 1.8 turbo k series in.

Hi Bootneck, welcome.
To answer your question to replace your cvh engine there are some easy options.
Taking it easy for you a 2.0 Pinto would be a straight forward swap but for some real hikes go for a Zetec. The 1.8 is easiest and can be made to give
the same power as a 2.0 with cams etc.
Getting in a bit further would see some bike carbs, Bogg Brothers can sort you out for a manifold, running a megajolt ignition system.
As Surrey dave above I made my own manifold from steel with a drill and jig saw.
You can find all the answers to your questions here. The guys have a wealth of advise, experience and knowledge.
