engine mounts

Apalogies if this has been asked recently, but I'm too lazy to do a search. I'm making my engine mounts soon, and I'm wandering how thick the plates to mount on the engine and the chassis need to be. I'm planning on using a rubber mount bolted to the chassis with a diagonal tube going to a plate on bolted to the engine. Is 3mm plate sufficent fot the end plates? The tube will be 2.5mm x 38mm cds, but on;ly since I have suitable off cuts of it. Rescued attachment engine mount diagram.jpg

That looks similar to mine, but the bolt will be done up from through the arm. There'll be a hole cut down to allow a socket in. A bit like this: Rescued attachment engine mount2.jpg

I personaly feel that 3mm is a bit on the thin side, especialy if the engine mounting bolts are not right next the the tube/box that is welded to the plate. Probably ok for a light engine, but for a Pinto/Zetec/XE etc. I would be happier with 5mm.
