exhaust mounting

I have a problem with my silencer mounting. The silencer droops at the tailpipe end. I can re-fix it but a drive over a bumpy road makes it droop again.

I have a stainless strap around the midle of the silencer which bolts onto a bracket fastened to a rubber cotton reel which bolts through the bodywork into a bracket on the chassis. The cotton reel bends so that the outer stud is angled down at about 30° below horizontal, the strap leans at the same angle, lowering the silencer. I have worked out that the silencer must be rotating in the strap to allow this.

How do I stop it happening?

I have thought about drilling and tapping holes in the can so that I can bolt the strap to it but I think that the holes will enlarge because of the forces on them. I think the same will happen if I rivet the strap to the can.

How have other people mounted thier silencers?

I used fiesta angine mount (supplied by Mac#1). It works great, if anything maybe too big.

Only thing to be careful of is some mounts need to be covered for SVA (due to the rubber being sandwiched between 2 steel plates).

Mine's like this:

Angle steel bracket extending from undert the car

Land Rover engine mount "bobbin"

Aluminium strap

Mine never slips... maybe yours slips because the strap can't be tightened enough, regardless of anything else? You could try putting an inner sleeve of ali inside the strap.

Alternatively, maybe the bobbin you've got is not up to the job. The LR engine mount I used is fine...
