Diff comaptibility

Hi all,

i'm currently have a 2.0XR4i diff wich prob have a 3,62 of 2,9x ratio.

because i have a BEC now i would have a top of 93Mph

i wanted that a bit higher not specially for
higher top but for better cruise sound etc.
and better fuel economy..

i was wondering if i buy a Diesel Diff 3,14 i
gess they where (from the 2.3liter sierra)

would i then still be able to use the rear end of the Xr4i?? diff flanges axle lenghts etc??

regards,

TKS

it all depends if the 3.14 Diff has Lobro (bolt on) flanges or if it has 2 holes in the sides for you to push fit your drive shafts into.

The sierra XR41 has lobro bolt on shafts therefore the Dif has bolt on flanges.

If you keep the 3.14 it will not be LSD though.

Hope thats made it a little clearer!

uhhh...

dunno good what i have,

but i have many bolts to undo before i can take of the driveaxle's.

then you see a machine part like a cupper or so.

can't the LSD unit be placed in the 3.14 diff??

or in wich diff it can..??

Are you planning on using the shafts and Disk brakes that fit that diff?

Some people have had the 3.38 diff (also from diesel) combined with a 3.62 LSD to make a 3.38 LSD - any transmission specialist should be able to do that for you.

but no one seems sure if you can undo the flanges (from inside the diff) and pull out the flanges with the holes like in your pic and then push them into the hole on the 3.14 or 3.38 diff - its all a mystery.

there should be a tag on the bolt holding the back plate on that tells you the ratio of it.

I believe there are 2 different lengths of those sierra diff output flanges - some diffs have a long on one side and a short on the other. But the right ones should clip in nicely!

I cleared this up a while back - will try and dig up the thread (with pics).

You can easily take the flanges out of a lobro type diff and insert tripode shafts (or use the flanges in a diff-with-holes). But...

Only with open diffs

Open diffs have the diff gears in the middle and need equal length splines inserted into them (either flanges or tripode shafts).

LSDs have the diff gears off to one side to make room for the viscous coupling. Sure you can remove the flanges but you'll find they are different lengths. Therefore you can't insert tripode shafts in an LSD, or insert LSD flanges in an open diff (one is too short - it will appear to go in but will not engage properly; one is too long and wont go in).

tks...

Shouldn't matter for you because...

a) Your XR4i diff is probably not an LSD unless it was an option. XR4i does not have an LSD as standard. Only 4x4 (and cosworth) have LSD as standard.

And... A torquey diesel that will give you a 3.38 or 3.14 diff almost certainly uses the thicker lobro (flanged) driveshafts. So you should be able to ditch the 3.92 and swap in the 3.38/3.14. If the 3.38/3.14 doesn't have flanges just fit the flanges from your 3.92 (as above assuming it is not an LSD).

b) If your 3.92 is an LSD and you want to fit the LSD unit into your 3.38/3.14 case then also no problem. You can do this and just use the flanges from your LSD.

Hope that's clear,

Liam

uhhhh

mine is from a sierra 4x4 2.0 thought,

wile running with the wheels from the ground

if i try to stop one wheel @ low rpm

then one wheel (the one you stop) works like a pneumatic hamer it try's to hammer to rotate..

is that a lsd?? maybe i open it up..

on my tag = 391??

i really need aprr 4 rounds a bit less soow its a 3,92 i think..

soow if i buy the 3,14 the parts are compatible but in the 3,92 housing??

Aah you said XR4i. 2.0 litre XR4x4 will indeed be a 3.92 LSD.

So you can swap it for a 3.38/3.14 non LSD as long as it has flanges. Some say you don't really need an LSD with a BEC.

Or, you can put your LSD unit in a 3.38/3.14 case when you get one and use the flanges from the LSD too.

yes, it is lsd, but in your first post you said xr4i, which as liam says usually isnt LSD.

you almost certainly wont find a 3.14 diff in a 2.3 diesel. Ive had several, and asked owners about many, never seen a 3.14 in one yet. To date, only in a 2.3 v6 petrol auto.

on way around the problem of tripode and lobro shafts is to use a hybrid shaft, with one end from each.

By the way...

I believe you put the LSD unit in the 3.14 case, not put the 3.14 crownwheel and pinion in the LSD case. This is because the 3.14 crownwheel and pinion is already nicely set up in it's case. If you did it the other way round you'd have to get the crownwheel and pinion properly shimmed up in its new case.

3.14s are like rocking horse sh*t over here. People will pay upwards of £500 for one!! Might be different in spain maybe??

Best of luck finding one! As for year and model I dont really know - but there is so much variation and options accross time and different models and markets that nothing is gauranteed! Best looking at the tags (if they are still readable) or counting revolutions.

But a lot of people find a 3.38 is fine, maybe with slightly larger diameter wheels.

case prob

there is only one thing..

as you see on above pic

one side of the diff (the upper mounting)
is bigger then the other one (the right one)

soow i don't think that the 3.14 one has that to, i needed to mod the chasis a bit on that point (move the bracket appr 15mm to the left)

Soo need to look @ a diesel diff with 3.14
ratio...

Nah - all 7" diff cases are identical. You wont have a problem there. Your biggest problem is finding a 3.14 in the first place!

As JoelP says it might not be a 2.3 diesel you're after. Try a 2.3 V6 petrol auto.

in the uk (probably everywhere), the diff code is printed on the vin plate between the headlights. Ive never seen one to be wrong yet. M is the code you want, or A/V (3.38ish), U is 3.62 and D is 3.92.

if you are just after info, try asking sellers on ebay - most are willing to look. That was how i found that a 2.3 v6 had a 3.14 diff. all diesels i asked about were V.
