Whats involved in converting a car engine to bike

Hello

I am Contemplating converting an MK Indy with a Pinto in it to a bike engine, either a R1 or GSXR

What would i need

1. Engine loom and clocks etc
2. propshaft

What else?, cradle...... has anybody else done this and was it a pain or relatively straight forward job

What overall cost would you think/

Thanks

I would add fuel pump from the bike if injection it may need a return pipe back to the tank, you may need a longer diff (around 3.1:1), exhaust manifold, make sure your brakes are up to it if increasing the power, loose as much weight as possible from the rest of the car, Reverse system?

Can you weld?
As you will need to add a piece to the top of chassis, then the mounting points for the cradle.speak to Danny at MK for a cradle.
Also the lower mountings will need making up and welding to the lower chassis.
You will also need a centre support welding in for the propshaft centre bearing to sit on.

Parts in silver are what I added to convert my chassis to take a R1 engine, the brackets above the prop bearing support are for the cable gear change I went for, also off MK cars.

I converted my Striker from car (Fiat) to zx9r..

Engine cradle, cost me nothing apart from the time and welding.. A few Quid's for paint.

New prop with a mid support. Made my own..

Exhaust £££ depends on whatever....

Fuel pump, water rails, wiring, gear stick, etc..

Depends how much you get off the bike and whether you can mod it all yourself.

How about lifting the pinto selling it on and buying a £100 zetec?

Take a look at this recent thread - it is far from straightforward - make sure you understand what you are getting into b4 you start!

Thread

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Engine cradle,
Gear linkages,
Flatshift?
Air intake,,
Sump mods or billet+baffle or dry sump system
Reverse gear (if needed)

Other than the items in the thread mentioned above... you'll also need a sense of humor to put up with the anti-BEC luddites

Thanks for all the info guy's

To be honest i used to have an MNR R1 and loved it, i just think the bike engine suits them for some reason!, i have also had a MK Indy with a 1.6 16V ecotec fitted with bike carbs, it went very well and revvy.

I have just acquired the Red MK Indy in my photo archive and it is fitted with a std 2 ltr Pinto running bike carbs, it has been parked up under a cover in my mates garage for 6 years not used!!, it runs fine and in very good nick but my original thought was to convert it to a bike engine.

Or alternatively what would be the easiest car engine conversion utilizing whats already their that's a bit more up to date etc, not bothered about injection as i may be able to reuse the R1 carbs already fitted to the Pinto.

I am open to suggestions, the car is on a Q plate so i don't know if that causes any other implication to consider

The fact that the thing is on a Q plate can only help matters, emissions will simply not matter.

If you have a pinto then duratec or zetec SE as they have the inlet/exhaust on the same side, for the duratec you may be able to use the exhaust with minor mods. I modified an escort mk1/2 pinto manifold to fit a puma zetec SE in my anglia, was a bit of a paint but possible. Use the bike carbs and a nodiz ecu. Both of these wil need a gearbox bellhousing (rwd motorsport) for the type 9.

1.6 zetec SE with arp rod bolts, HD valve springs and a cam will give you 160+hp at 8k rpm - have a look at shawspeed, lightning motorsport (lms) or oc motorsport for bits (with tbs and ecu). Chestersports cars do a bike carb kit for it as well. Probably the best compromise between car and bike engine, very light, revs well and if it goes bang it will cost £100 to replace.

The zetec E should be a nice easy swap, no special bell housings needed and they can be very cheap too.
but as above it would involve swapping the exhaust to the other side
