Toyota parts costs !!
I started rebuilding my spare 4age engine and could not obtain any aftermarket big end shells to fit or of good quality.
I finally decided that Toyota were right and I should order from them to get the best shells for the engine.
I ordered up a full set of big end shells and was stunned by the cost £ 56-40.
I'm no cheapskate but that is a bit high.
Shells for Ford or such are approx £25 a set!

IMHO I think that very few toyotas ever get rebuilt. The nomal car goes on and on.
People just get a new one and throw the old one away. Thus parts prices will be higher.

Rob,
I think Mango's got to the heart of it - they tend not to go wrong, so there's not a big market for the spares, hence the cost. On the
other side of the coin, servicing a Toyota is on a par with many European cars - certainly cheaper than the Citroen I used to have.
Mind you, if you think Toyota parts are expensive, try Honda car parts!

Rob, You think thats bad ,I paid about £75 for my big ends,mains and thrusts and they were aftermarket jobs,it made £30 for the rear crank seal
(genuine) look reasonable.
I'm used to buying Lorry and plant parts every day as you know ,so this is all quite cheap in comparison,still hurts when its your own money
though!
Looks like i'll have to work another saturday morning to pay for it.
I've just worked out my little oil starvation has cost about £200 in parts,could have bought another engine for that.
Once I've finished a project why do I start another?

Mine was on it's way out 12 years ago - cheapest I could get one fitted for was £1000 Sold the thing first!

Toyota parts are ludicrously expensive, when I changed the cam belt on my MR2 Turbo, the idler pulley was ~£80 and the tensioner ~£120. New head
gasket (just the gasket) was ~£60. It takes £50 worth of the special Toyota coolant to do a coolant change.

I imagine with the cost of labour to remove the engine etc it'd be frickin' expensive...

parts for supras aint cheap either. currently were stripping ours to take the engine out.
what for you say? to replace a coolant banjo bolt that died but it's right up against the bulkhead.
the banjo bolt will be around £15 and the banjo itself another £20odd. it isnt the first one to go either

My brother just bought a new alternator for his previa import,£405 with the VAT on.

Unfotunatly nobody could fix the old one for whatever reason,even a well known F1 team had a go at it but to no avail.
I couldnt believe it when he told me the price,and this was part only so i wouldnt like them to have fitted it.
