Xflow starter motor
Can anyone help with my hillclimb/ sprint striker project.
Trying to turn over my 1390 xflow prior to stating it with the spark plugs out but the starter motor spins them locks and stops dead.
The engine will turn over by hand but does feel a little tight. Its a old Autosprint rally spec engine that I picked up on the cheap. Told by the guy
selling it that it ran ok prior to removal.The starter motor was jamming when we tested it so we had it reconditioned. The solenoid is a new one and
I'm using a battery booster so theres plenty of juice.
The gearbox is a standard 4 speed one out of a 1600 escort. Not sure if the flywheel came with the engine or gearbox so could this be the problem

The starter is an inertia one that needs a separate solenoid.
The ring gear in the photo looks like the square type that needs a pre-engaged starter. Having said that the teeth are very rusty. Need a clean to
ensure they release correctly or a new matching ring gear, the teeth sould have a taper on them.
Basically the starter and ring gear need to match, form your photo's they don't.

So you think I'm trying to attach the wrong type of starter motor and I need the pre engaged type

Yes would agree you either need to change to a pre engaged starter or fit an inertia type ring gear

Hi. Have a spare pre-engaged type starter to suit the Ford T9 gearbox. However, its for mounting on the driver's side, i.e. opposite to the
"normal" LHS location. U2U me if its of interest.
Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

Count the number of teeth on the ring gear, the Burtons catalogue and website will tell you if it is for an inertia or pre engaged starter

Just be counting the teeth on my flywheel and starter. Not easy with engine and gearbox still in the car.
I got 110 on the flywheel and 10 on the starter.
The teeth on the flywheel don't seem to have a any relief from the front (engine side)and I can't see what shape the teeth are from the
back(gearbox side) Will have a look with a small mirror later.
Not sure how this effects me. Do I need a different starter or is it down to the surface rust (not that bad to be honest just slight surface rust that
wipes off)

Ford used both a 10 tooth 29mm diameter pinion gear and a 9 tooth 29mm diameter gear with the X-Flow 110 tooth ring gear.

To be pedantic, the correct pinion is 9 tooth for the genuine Lotus fitted 110 tooth ring gear. Your 10 tooth pinion has come from a post 1987 starter
which was about the time Lucas stopped making 9 tooth pinions due to lack of demand as it was only used on Ford derivatives, and standardized on 10
tooth pinions that were still in demand from other OEMs. The 10 tooth pinion does work OK but is not ideal for the Lotus ring gear – and has a
history, I guess, well archived on this forum.
When you buy a geared pre-engaged starter motor, the good suppliers always offer 9 or 10 tooth pinions to suit all applications.
