Air filter position
Hi all it's been pointed out to me that my air filter is currently in a bad place as its right behind the radiator so getting all the hot air.
Question is where would I be best to put it.
So far I've come up with 2 ideas
1. 90' bend to the cone which will be just in front of the belts and then cut a vent out in the front nose to allow air directly to the cone
2. Remove black pipe and run a new hose to a large (carb style) filter to the side of the engine and cut a vent in the side of the bonnet. This would
look similar to those with tb's and filter but I would make a new plate on the back of the filter to allow one 3' hose.
I am also going to cut out a few vents to let the hot air escape so depending which filter setup I go for depends where I cut the vents

What about a NACA duct installed to top of nosecone and then connect your flexible inlet pipe to it
Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

is there no room to just place the duct over the radiator?, or maybe create some sort of letterbox collector over the rad that ducts and opens out to
the dia of the air feed pipe.

I did something similar, a few on here have used NACA ducts, I think Jon Ison did, for one.

I think i would be either a hole in the nose cone and NACA or hole in a side panel
Dont worry about ram air effect, it does not work above the top speed of our cars, apparently.
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

Is it not bad to run without an actual filter?
I wasn't really doing the back vents for ram effect just looks cool and might possibly let out the hot air in the engine bay when really hot.

Thats a low pressure area and doesnt help feed air in..
Best place is at the bottom of the nose cone in the middle, maximum air feed with the highest pressure.

That looks good but isn't all the hot air from radiator get sucked in
I've had another look at the car over the weekend and it seems there is no room next to the radiator so it's either fit a naca duct to
the left side of the nose cone and connect the hose straight to it
Or
Sausage type filter to the side but that would mean I have to custom make a backplate with an inlet for the silicone hose.
What do you guys think would get me the most amount of cold air to the engine?
The first option will be in direct line of air as its at the front but will have a longer way to travel before reaching the engine so air could warm
up.
Second option will have filter on the side so not directly in air flow but a very short pipe to engine and filter will be double the size.

Hi guys bringing this old post back up as I never got round to doing anything but now I'm ready so after a bit more advice.
The 2 best options I have come up with are;
1) filter at the end of the black inlet pipe with naca duct in nose cone directed straight to the filter (the red flex hose will be binned)
2) remove red flex hose and black metal inlet tube and have a filter on the side of the bonnet with a short hose to tb.
Now will a shorter inlet make any difference as with the black inlet in the distance from filter to tb is around 400mm and inlet diameter is 65mm.
Filter on the side will eliminate the long inlet and leave me with a short 100mm hose to tb but filter is on the side and not directly in air flow.

Thanks for that info. The only issue with mine would be the long inlet as the tb is at the back of the engine after the long inlet tube whereas yours
seems to be at the front

Not too sure what you mean? If you retain the orange pipe, but at a shorter length and use a method similar to what I did then you've reduced
your inlet tract, not lengthen it?

Sorry I didn't explain clearly. The orange hose is connected to a metal black tube that is around 400mm long then enters the tb at the back end
of the engine whereas yours has the short black hose then straight to tb.
The worry I have is if my total inlet hose is too long and if it will benefit being shorter and filter being placed on the side coming out of the
bonnet. This will eliminate the orange and black hoses and just have a short silicone hose to air filter.
Some say the length of the inlet hose doesn't matter?

Hi all me again. I'm struggling to fit a filter between the inlet pipe and naca duct due to bonnet clearance and came up with a solution but not
sure if it'll be ok.
I'm thinking of using a filter sock like you use on trumpets and putting it over the inlet hose then a cold air feed hose over it to naca duct.
This will mean that inside the hose will be the flat section of the sock to catch and objects and filter the air.
Question is will this be enough filtration?
