Puma Zetec 1.7 engine length
Hi,
Does anyone have a 1.7 Puma or a 1.7 Zetec engine in their car that they could measure for me? I'm looking for the effective length of the
engine from the back of the cylinder head to the front of the crank pulley. Hoping for something around 460mm or less.
I'm thinking ahead for when I replace the engine in my Midget and don't want to cut the heater tray to make room for the new engine -
something that has to be done for the K series. I'm hoping the 1.7 Zetec is a shorter block than a K plus as it is alloy it will be light as
well.
cheers

Just did a very quick measurement on mine, and I think the measurement you mean is approx 520mm, not including the coilpack...

Cheers Ed - that's the length that I needed measuring and it is longer than I'd thought it would be. Somewhere I'd seen a length of
460mm for a 1.6 Zetec SE mentioned and hoped the 1.7 was of a similar length - that's assuming the 460mm was correct. Space is at a premium
under a Midget bonnet so I might have to look down the turbo route, possibly with a replacement cylinder head.
Your input and time is much appreciated.
cheers

I've just measured a 1.25 Zetec SE and a 1.6 Zetec SE that I've got here, and they're all pretty much the same I'm afraid...
Nothing under 500mm, but they are an awesome engine!
The 460mm is probably the length of the actual casting itself without the added length of the crank pulley?

Thanks Ed for the time you've spent measuring engines.
I've decided on the 4AGE route and picked up an engine and the block and pulley works out at 490mm long. Also the pulley is a double row one and
the outer row can be removed giving another 15mm of space. Now to find a bellhousing to fit it to the type 9.

Hi Bas,
My Puma 1.7 is in my Mojo SE, and it's a tight fit! The biggest problem isn't the length, but the distance front-to-back (inlet manifold
to exhaust) and I think the engine bay in the SE chassis is a bit longer than the Mojo 2? There's literally a few millimetres clearance on each
side of the engine, but you could probably gain some space by making a custom exhaust system. I didn't have the budget to do this when I fitted
mine and it's still using the stock cast iron exhaust. Maybe that'd be a good winter upgrade for me? Hmmm....
I'll see if I can get some photos and measurements when I get back to the garage.
What engine do you have in there at the moment?
Ed.
