Duratec types
Basically been reading about these and there seems to be multiple types of the same capacity (2 litre) about.
I was looking at a car with an St 170 duratec in it thinking this would be the daddy but, apparently, it has an iron block and is under square?!
Anyone point me to a good guide (wiki was a bit hit and miss) or shed some light on Duratecs for me.

Duratec is just a name - tells you nothing about the engine really. The ST170 is little more than a fancy zetec with variable inlet cam timing - older
design than the 2L zetec you're probably thinking of with an all alloy engine etc

Beware of Ford badging, a True Duratec has the exhaust manifold on the right, the Zetec on the left.

This is my understanding og the Ford range of petrol engines.
1992 First series Zetec E 16 valve (silvertop) introduced in 1.6 1.8 and 2.0 litre sizes.
Hydraulic valve lifters, iron block and aluminium cylinder head. Cast aluminium sump.
1998 ish Second series Zetec 16 valve (blacktop0 engine introduced, with the same capacities as above.
This engine had a 2 piece sump, the lower part being presed steel. It had solid valve lifters.
The iron block and aluminium cylinder head retained.
ST 170 engine is a high performance version of the Zetec black top with variable valve timing.
1995 The Zetec S (Sigma) family of 16 valve engines introduced with capacities of 1.25, 1.4 1.6 and 1.7 litres.
The 1.7 litre version had variable valve timing and was usedin the Puma.
Developed in conjuction with Yamaha, this range of engines is of all aluminium construction and
does not share components from the other Zetec engines.
2002 ish The second generation of the Sigma family introduced, called Zetec SE.
2001 ish The Duratec range of 16 valve engines introduced. An all aluminium engine family with capacities of 1.8, 2.0
and 2.3 litres. Called the I4 engine type. It is similar to Mitsubishi engines.
Lots of mistakes I'm sure, so make the corrections.

what they said ^^
the problem is ford call all there petrol engines duratecs now
'duratec HE' is the one your after - it actuall started life as a mazda 'MZR' engine (also found in later MX5's with a 6
speed rwd box)
the ST150 fiesta uses this engine and already has a normal flywheel (not dual mass) and no ERG valve
things called duratecs include 2.5 & 3.0 V6's (also mazda design) and all the versions of the sigma engines (aka zetec S or SE) and the 2.5
5pot volvo based ones in the new ST cars - just shows you can't trust a name....

The ST 150 is the one you want as stated above egr blanked and standard flywheel 150hp (aprox) out the box around 200hp with throttle bodies
here's mine below, there's plenty of tuning parts but they are not the cheapest to convert to rear wheel drive, but are straightforward to
get plenty of horses
Duratec to Type9 Bellhousing
Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016
