15mm bore fuel filter

I want to put a fuel filter between my tank and the injection petrol pump. The pipe is 15mm ID HP rubber hose.

Can anyone recommend a suitable filter? and a cheap source?

Silly answer now, but are you sure it's 15mm, that's very big, the bosch pumps are usually 12mm or 1/2 inch?

I know that Opel mantas have a prefilter with 1/2 inch inlet and outlet, so you may be able to get a new one of these.

I have never bothered with a prefilter on my cars, if the tank is new and clean then there will be no problem (but I know where you are coming from cos I thought the same first time until I realised I couldn't get new filters very easily!)

definately 15mm, just checked again, I seem to remember that the Mk3 cavaliers had an ally prefilter tucked underneath the RHR arch that may be suitable

I have a mk 3 cavvy Bosch injection pump and it has a 12mm inlet? Is there a step down in the pipe? There is certainly an ally filter by the rear arch after the fuel pump on these, dunno about a prefilter?

Let me know though, might be a handy source if you are right!

If it fits, prefilter or not, it will end up being one!

my granada pump, which is most likely bosch, is a 15 - 16mm inlet.

Also, I dont recall an intake filter - just a big almost coke can sized thing on the 8mm output line

Hello

For clarification ! The ID is 12mm but OD is 15mm, so 12mm ID fuel hose is a very tight fit over the inlet, hence the use of 15mm fuel hose and hence the need for the larger than normal fuel filter !

Anyway ! did you find a filter to fit ? I need one this size aswell as Im also using a cossie pump as in your picture above. Incidentally whats the part fastened to the outlet ? and do you have a pic of the outlet with fuel pipe connected etc ?

Thanks

James

I never saw that originally mark!

yes is the answer, and im pretty sure it was nearer 15mm than 16mm.......

and the output was via a banjo bolt to a 8mm o/d push on / clip fitting

I dont have a filter - it would seem a good idea tho......

Just to be a trouble maker...

I went through three fuel pumps in as many months in the Mini a few years back -- all different makes.

My wife came out for a look (she's a hydraulics specialist) and the first thing she had me do was bin the filter between the tank and pump.

Apparently pumps don't like to 'pull' and any restriction in a feed line can lead to madness.

According to the 'boss' anything more than a mesh strainer is just asking for troubles.

YMMV, Ted

p.s. The Mini is still going on the same pump four years on, touch wood.

my wife is a nursery nurse, so thats bum all use for me!

(unless its to help my spelling and typos!)

I had it in mind that restrictions are bad, and as you say, anything would need to be a free flowing mesh.

I made the mistake of arguing the point with her at the time -- "But's it's brand new, not plugged at all...", pause while I pull it out and blow through it to show her, "See...", just shook her head and said "Do what you want then, mutter, mutter...".

Week later after it burned up another of the pumps I did as told, head hung in shame

Cheers, Ted

I didn't fit a filter in the end, the sierra never had one, and room to fit one is virtually non existant

Steve, you are right, I forgot that one.

What I need now is an internal gauze to fit inside the 15mm ID pipe!!

Years ago, I used to run pubs, when keeping real ale, there was a brass filter, encapsulated in leather that kept all the hops, yeast out of the beer and was fitted on the outlet of the barrel tap - one of those would be just right.

So! I went down the pub, in Crowlas, we have about the best real ale pub this side of Exeter, The Star. The landlord is a biker, and a previous builder of very buch modified cars, a bike engined 2CV for one!

He gave me one of the new super modern equivalent filters that I used to use. They are now stainless steel, and have a compression gasket made of thermoplastic acrylic. The TPA pulls off like chewing gum on application of a heat gun, and you have an insertable filter. The image shows the mesh as being a bit coarse, but the total size of this is only 24mm across, so the holes look like about 0.4mm.

My prefilter is now inside the inlet to the pump, easily removable/replacable Rescued attachment BeerOrFuelFilter.JPG

thought your filter from a spray gun idea sounded good....

the element in the filter i suggested gives little resistance when you blow throu it and the mesh is microscopic...... think im gonna go that route.

that mesh that Mark has looks quite good as a "big dirt stopper" which is all you really need. The Opel Manta has a mesh prefilter in a plastic can before the pump,(all the right size pipe to connect to the inlet of the Bosch pump) as well as an ally can filter after the pump.

On all of the large numbers of mantas I have owned (well, bar the first one) I chucked it in the bin, and chucked the flow damper that also resides near the pump, just used the pump and ally (main)filter and nowt else. (mainly cos the bracketry that hold it all together is always rotten and a smaller bracket is easier to make/fit) Worked with a 200hp Vauxhall XE engine on throttle bodies in the manta I used as an everyday road car for 15,000 miles.
