Why is old stuff so expensive?

I just bought myself an engine for my Elan - it's dead, needs a full rebuild and cost me more than I'm selling a low mileage R1 motor for!

I'm still excited though :-)

Supply and demand.

Still on Stromberg carbs which I think makes it very original.

Although not for long! Aparently they were fine for a road car - better emissions and more reliable, but ths will go in a hillclimb car so Webers are the way forward!

On my old Elan the inlet manifold was cast into the head. ££££££ for another weber head

Your old mate Dermot had some Twink bits in, might be worth giving him a ring if you are talking.

Why ££££ to fix ??

I did mine quite cheaply, its only a xflow bottom end

The head though could of cost a good deal more to fix, and the stud holes that hold the camshaft caps on seem to be made of cheese, well mine were !!

There is a company that machines off the Stromberg inlets for either webers or throttle bodies..read it in a book somewhere!

Why haven't you put the R1 engine in the elan? ACBC would have done it in an instant if they were available in his day!

I'm sure he would but he didn't so I have to run with the twin cam to be 'historic'! Although my car actually ran with a 2 litre BDA so I'm led to believe so I could be really adventurous (and in debt for years!)

Which one........ Don't laugh but the mint shell I wanted to buy ages ago has just become available (a day after I took the other one for soda blasting). It'll cost me but it'll also speed up the build by months. And it's gorgeous!

No-brainer! Wasn't the spare disturbingly heavy anyway?

Still interested to hear how the soda blasting goes/went if you go ahead.

Definite no brainer! Just need to convince my wife :-)

The spare is a tad heavy although I planned to take a lot of the weight out of all the bits that aren't needed (make floors lighter as the cage will take the weight of the seat, boot floor, removal of steel lattice side protection / stiffening etc).

Hopefully I can clinch the deal on the mint shell soon!

Deal clinched :-) The nice shell is mine!

And the engine is striped and looks OK - one of the pistons is stuck in the bore but I just think the rings are crudded up. Bores look good so maybe it's not a huge rebuild !
