20v 4age engine and I can't get it to start!

Your help or suggestions to solve my problem would be appreciated!

Set up = 20v 4age (std engine with new rings, bearings, bore honed, head skimmed and valves re cut), Omex 600 ECU (2nd hand from e bay), Ford coil pack., Trigger wheel from RAW (same as I had on my 16v engine), all sensors from Omex and used on my 16v engine previously. New plug leads.

I've completed my new engine installation but now I can't get it to start, seems like I haven't got a spak at the plugs. I've checked as much as I can with my very limited electrical knowledge but would appreciate any ideas as to what / how to check next. It must be something simple???

I've got fuel going to the engine, as the fuel pumps runs when the ignition key is turned on and this is also powered from the ECU.

Any ideas what to check next as I want to get my car back on the road!!!!

I had a couple of minor problems with mine. one really stupid and one slightly stupid.

First for the really stupid on - I connected the Omex to the aux connection on the ignition - which it turns out is disconnected when you crank the engine. I have no idea how many hours it took me to find that one. Everthing looks normal when you turn on the ignition - fuel pump, coil... all energised.. but crank the engine and nothing.

The second issue was just to make sure the gap is OK on the trigger wheel. From memory I think they quote 25thou but mine needed to be a little bit less.

Any ideas how I can check that I'm getting a signal from the VR sensor? It's the same set up as I had on my 16v engine so I hope it should be OK....

Do you have the OMEX software loaded on a laptop ?

If the crank sensor is ok you should get sparks and fuel

Check for voltage at the conection to the coil pack

Yes I've got the Omex software but I'm not that familiar with it, also need to find an adaptor for the serial lead to a USB port.

Think I get fuel, as Iknow the fuel pumps starts and the engine smells of fuel and the plugs get wet, also I've had one big backfire....

I hate cars......well just now I do!

I found out the problem (eventually!!!) surprised you didn't hear my shout of YES!!!

Turned out to be a faulty VR sensor and a gap that was too large, took some finding though as all seemed OK when I measured it with metres and via the laptop / omex software (as I was getting readings).

Thanks to Martin @ Raw, as he really helped me to find the problem!! TOP BLOKE!!! (I think he also spoke to Andrew at Omex too!)

Garage doing the MOT in the morning, so I hope it passes and I can get back on the road after 13 months of re-building.

Finger's crossed please!!

Thanks for your help and suggestions too!

Damn too late as I would have said to check the gap as it needs to very close and there is a setting in the software for the sensitivity while cranking. That's the only reason I've had trouble before assuming everything else stayed the same i.e. swapping from a 16V to 20V or 20V to 20V.

It passed the MOT so I was road legal by 12.30 on Saturday afternoon! Pity I had to wait until the Sunday to get out in it. Did only a few miles and took my son to football training only for it to conk out as I pulled into the car park!

Thought I'd blown a fuse or something. All to no avail. So lucky I had the tow rope in the car! Managed to get a tow home by another parent and sussed the problem out as soon as I got home > fuel pump had stopped working. So quickly swapped it over for a spare just now!

Question, should I have a filter before and after the pump (it's an in-line Bosch type off a Cavalier) or just before? Mines after the pump just now so perhaps that's the problem?

Also need to sort out the engine settings, etc as it's not quite right yet. SPoke to Martin @ RAW today and he gave me some advice on what to look at first. Also the cooling must have some air in it as it's runs too hot just now > any advice Justin on all of the above??

It's good to be back on the road again though!
