Where does the thermostat go

On a Toyota 4AGE 16v engine the thermostat is in a seperae housing on the FWD gear box.
I have installed the engine with out the thermostat, but is is playing havock with the engine management system. Also the gauge never shows more that 40 deg.
Question. I have a pipe that is connected to the centre of the waterpump and a pipe connected to the head. In which one should the thermostat go and where should the sensor for the gauge be. what pipe and what side of the thermostat. Rescued attachment Water Pump.JPG

The top bit with the alternator bracket has a sender in it already doesn't it ? You want your thermostat just after that in the top hose so it opens when the water in the block gets to temp and circulates through the radiator. That part actually looks like a thermostat housing.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I had to remove that sensor because I fitted the 20V throttle bodies. I currently have the sensor in that pipe, but the thermostat in the other pipe.
Thanks
