type 9 gearbox problem.

I have had a good day today, got the engine and gearbox mated up.... for some reason, I decided to turn the engine over from the pulley.... and there was a metallic clicking - the clutch body was just catching the tips of the ribs inside the bellhousing. Took it apart again, and shaved a couple of mm off with the dremmel (see pic). Now its ok, but I'm glad I found out when I did!

Now a question for you guys (and gals) who've been here before.....

......when the gearbox oil is filled, and you tip it 'nose down' without the propshaft, do you expect the oil to pour out of the prop. Or, in other words, does the prop make the seal?

If so, how do you stop it coming out when fitting it into the chassis? Rescued attachment trim bellhosing ribs.jpg

Oil will leak out, the seal is formed by the oil seal against the prop, so no prop no seal.

Fill it after you've put it in the car.

I used a plastic bag over end of gearbox when installing in the car, did not seal very well but saved making a mess. Then topped up once it was fitted.

Why do they call Port Harcourt "The Garden City"?...... Becauase they can't spell Stramash.

Solution - Locost style!

Thanks very much for the replies, I had a suspicion that was the case - breathes sigh of relief - the alternative wasn't going to be very helpful at this stage (ie gearbox leak!!)

I didn't fancy trying to fill the gearbox after fitting it - not much room in the tunnel !

Following on from Jacko's idea, I measured the diameter, and found the measuring cup/lid from a milk of magnesia is a perfect fit!

Excellent result!
And now, I can go engine fitting tomorrow at long last!

Go to a scrappy and cut the end off a prop shaft, and grind it down to as small as you can get, works a treat. Whilst your there, see if you can blag an input shaft from the gearbox, makes a handy clutch centering tool whilst your at it.

As to the casting mod, is this because you don't have a splash plate thingy, that would add a mm or so between bell housing and engine?

Reply to bluemoon..

yes, you are right - that is possibly the reason for the clutch clipping the ribs - the bellhousing is one of SBD's - I don't think they are likely to get the dimensions wrong.

I don't have a dust cover / splashplate - anyone know where I can get one?
