MT-75

Can anyone advise me on the possibilities of swapping the bellhousing (i know it's not a bell housing as such) from a 4x4 mt-75 to a standard 2 w/d back end thus doing away with the transfer box? Or maybe point me in the direction of a gearbox specialist.
Thanks Kieth

I think you would be better off (unless you have a reason I cannot think of) to sell the 4x4 MT75 and buy a 2wd one, they are pretty common in 2wd form and are thus fairly cheap. Hang on, just thought, is this request cos you are using a V6 and need a 2wd 'box? If so, I see the problem, you need a granada 2.9 manual to get the 'box from, pretty rare I suppose....doh!!

Cheap alternative, (though I know why you don't want to use it as they are not renowned for being that strong) is get a 2.8 Capri Type 9 box (the V6 Type 9's were better, had better layshaft bearings and a few other small changes)

I recently stripped & rebuilt my MT75. It seems to me that when the box is split in half, all the gear clusters remain in the back half of the box, and the front half is more or less just the bell housing + first motion shaft.
I'm no MT75 expert, and my opinion is based purely on my 1 experience, but I would guess that a V6 front half would bolt up to a 4pot back half. In fact, it may be that the ally casting is common, and only the 1st motion shaft needs changing. (I'm sure you more knowledgable chaps will correct me on that!). In either case, my guess is that provided that the 1st motion shaft gear on the V6 has the same number of teeth as a 4 pot, the back half of a box could be interchangeable. I look forward to be shot down in flames!

Terry

I think you are right TL, certainly the design is very similar to the Getrag 240 (Opel Manta 5 speed) and on that the front casing is "exchangeable", but you have to be a bit careful about the correct shimming for the preload/endfloat (cant remember if they are tapers or not, they aren't on the 240) on the input shaft (front end of mainshaft) bearing. Does my crap memory serve me correctly in thinking that there are adjusters for the bearing prelead within the bellhousing end of the box on the MT75, or is that just my crap recollection (it probably is!!)

From memory, the 1st motion shaft has a ball bearing (or possibly cylindrical roller, but I think ball), not taper roller. It is not preloaded.
However, the layshaft bearing is preloaded, as there is a locking tab (visible in the bell housing) which locates the bearing locator/cap thingy. I don't know what the preload is, I just made sure I marked the cap & bellhousing prior to dismantling, and re-assembled it in the same position. Do an image search on google for MT75, and there are a couple of pickies (on the Ford Scorpio site IIRC). I'm pretty sure the casing shown is Transit, but I assume the internals are the same Rescued attachment mt75.gif
