Chargecoolers, who uses what?
Im looking to run a chargecooler setup in a book locost chassis, the cooler on top of the scuttle with a rad out front.
I need cooling for 225bhp initially but ultimately 400 or so capability.
I could just buy the lot from pwr but I see lots of suggestion of motorbike rads and home made coolers.
Who runs what, and how successful has it been?
Cheers

Here's my set up. I'm using a CC I bought off ebay (like this one:
linky)
It turned out bigger than I expected, so I've actually installed in in the passenger footwell (should keep SWMBO's feet warm ), but it
does fit in a book chassis:
I've not finished plumbing it yet, so I can't tell you how well it works, but you can see the pump and my 'locost' header tank
for it in the first pic. I plan to initially use a sierra heater matrix as a cheap radiator (as I have one kicking about), but we'll see if
it's up to the job - I'm fitting a temp gauge to the system to see how hot it gets.

neat install! I saw those on ebay and wondered if they were any good.
How much space have you lost in the footwell? I need space for a 6'4 passnger
cheers for the pics and reply

For a decent capacity one that lies pretty flat have a look at either a Subaru Legacy or Toyota Celica one...

hmm, interesting. they big enough for the power? Or is the power limitation of the std ones more the radiator sizes?

youd be better off piping in a decent intercooler .

on the t5 the turbo outlet and the inlet maifold both end up facing back. Room for a big intercooler in the nose is non existant and I dont want like
8 feet of pipe and 2 180 deg bends. This was I can have a 3 foot inlet with two 90 deg bends

this was when i jury rigged things together for santa pod , turbo faces backwards , you can see the ally pipe running just above the lower chassis
rail
this is the other side
if you can fit that radiator , you can fit an intercooler there too .

what rad and cooler is that?
I cant help thinking that to come out of the turbo and turn to run forward, then back and thru a 180 deg bend to go in the inlet is pretty horrible?

thats a std 740 turbo setup .
dont forget the t5 stuff is also pretty long - thats why they invented the reverse intercooler piping kit for those engines that ran hot .
its not coming 180 degrees tho is it ?
only 90 either way to an intercooler .

90 out of the turbo, 180 into the t5 inlet.
The standard 740 rad and cooler fittd into the nosecone?

no !!! , i made a special nose for it after the fact and realised i need full bodywork to get anywhere near using the std radiator/intercooler , a
similar size one could fit if the inlets/outlets both point backwards
if you can weld you can easily make a new manifold using one of these .

I use a Pace cooler. The rad is heater matrix from a Golf with a Yamaha R6 fan.
This works really well and I can control the temp of the charge from the ECU (by turning the fan on/off).
Not sure what the comp out temp is but it is giving 1bar on a T2 turbo so I would assume it is quite high.

I thought long and hard about this before going down the chargecooler route. Because of the size of my engine, I simply wouldn't be able to run
the large bore piping all the way from the turbo to the front of the car then all the way back to the TB at the back of the engine and keep it all
within the bonnet. I also thought about cutting and shutting my phlenum so that the TB pointed forward, but I chickened out of doing that.
Having said that, it you can fit it in a practical way, then I would recommend an Intercooler as it is a lot more simple to do.

I loose about 8", plus a little more when I fit a foot rest in front of the cooler. Probably too much to loose for someone 6'4

Just a confidence thing on my part - knew it could be done, but didn't fancy taking it on. Also, I would have to lower the TB down as well to
make sure it would fit under the nosecone.

Looks like a nice set up there
Nice to know that my heater matrix plan has been done and works.
By the way, what car is it you have there? I'm trying to work it out but failing?

I did subsequently get the front end re-done to point down by about 45 degrees; just chopped a "vee" out and got it welded back up again.

What ever system you use take the inlet air from outside the engine bay, this will put you probably 50deg ahead of the game to start with.

that inlet stubby comes form the 6 cylinder engine , just cut a cylinder off !!.
connect up with 50mm silicon hose to a plenum , job done ala benzine , i supplied the bits to him for it .
