Inlet Manifold Gasket

Here is my inlet manifold gasket, as supplied by Boggs to go with the the ZZR carbs they also supplied.

Can anyone explain why the sealing (red)parts of the gasket seem to allow communication between the 4 inlets, all be it restriced due to the small gap?

Is this normal for the manifold side of the gasket? On the other side (engine side) there are 4 sealing rings round each of the 4 ports.

Standard ford zetec inlet gasket. The channels all communicate with a leg down to the bottom left of the pic (rear of the engine) where the standard inlet has a pipe for the crankcase breather.
