Thanks for all the positive responses chaps - I'm suitably encouraged.
I have a stack of 1.6mm mild steel sheet that will be nice and easy to weld, but this would end up rather heavy I suppose. I'll get myself some
0.9 or 1mm and have a go with that.

not done it but about this "cold start" thing.
I've got some info about welding butt joints in aluminium sheet and it suggests putting a sacrificial piece of aluminiun next to the edge- you
start welding on this piece and cary over onto the joint - could this not be used in this case?

possibly, but not worth the hassle of then trying to hack it off afterwards!
This might then cause another leak.
The sacrificial piece is really for welding at a slightly different level to what we are talking about on here
