I am aware when i source my zetec engine that the escort one is better as it has a slightly different water pump configuration.
Question.
At my local scrappy, the engines have already been removed, how do I know the difference when looking at the basic engine?
cheers,
B
escort water pump will have grooved ribs while mondeo water pump will be smooth.
PS Only true for silvertops.
All blacktops have the same water pump irrespective of whether the engine is from a focus or mondeo ....
better bet is the engine code.

Silver top escort water pump inlet pipe sticks straight out, mondeo 2 litre water pump inlet pipe leans back towards flywheel.
Talking flywheels, the mondeo 2 litre has a huge chunk of a flywheel where the escort has slightly less bulk.
As big wasa mentions the engine numbers/codes helps a lot. engine numbers are on flange flywheel end exhaust side near crank position sensor.
