3GEComponents - 7/5/08 at 12:35 PM

We are proud to announce that we are now agents for Alphax's superb conversion kit to mount Audi's brilliant 5 valve engine to the Ford MT75 gearbox.

Geert has prepared a description of his kit and is able to supply good low millage engines for this conversion too. Contact us at component-sales@hotmail.co.uk for further information.

Thanks

John

Audi 1.8i 20v Turbo: Proper turbo power!

Standard horsepower: between 150 and 225 bhp.

The Audi 1.8 turbo engine is a widely manufactured engine. It was first introduced in the VW-Audi group cars around 1995 and has been in 17 different cars of 4 different makes. These high quality engines are still used in cars which are manufactured today.

The 1.8 turbo engine is available in many different horsepower setups, but they’re basically all the same. It is a 4 cylinder engine with 5 valves per cylinder, and it has a small turbo. The difference in power output is mostly done by controlling the ECU and small differences in the turbo. There are the three main turbo differences:

Stock 150 bhp: standard K03 turbo
Stock 180 bhp: the K03Sport turbo
Stock 225 bhp: the K04 turbo (this setup was found in the Audi TT, S3 and Seat Leon Cupra)

Putting a small turbo on a 5 valve/cylinder engine gives you great power and great torque. The torque comes in directly as the turbo starts kicking in, already at 1800 rpm. Because it is only a small turbo on this engine, there’s no big turbo lag. And the torque stays until 5500 rpm. The power is anywhere between 150 bhp and 265 bhp, depending on engine management and the turbo. All different turbo’s fit the same engine, you can mix and match with parts of different setups to find your ideal one.

Being only 63cm tall and 47 long, this engine easily fits in the Roadster. Alphax Kitcars from the Netherlands have designed an adapter plate to fit this engine to a Ford MT75 gearbox. This aluminium CNC'd adapter plate is part of a kit, which also includes a modified flywheel, a custom made clutch with a new clutch cover, a spacer for on the release bearing, and various bits for mounting the kit. The MT75 gearbox (found mostly in the later Sierra’s) is well capable of holding all this power. A reinforced type-9 gearbox is also suitable. To keep costs down, this engine can run on a MegaSquirt or Emerald ECU.

I bought a kit from Geert Alphax at the start of the year and it went together just fine. Just watch that you get the correct starter motor - I had one from a 2.0DOHC XR4x4 and it does not fit, just make sure the starter motor is from a 2WD 2.0DOHC Sierra.
Also you have to cut a section out of the gearbox housing to get the starter motor to fit as it on the opposite side than it would be on the Sierra.
Make the engine mounts after the conversion and starter motor are fitted because if the 3 obvious M10 mount points on the engine block are used for the mount they will foul the starter motor.
Top marks for Geerts customer service.
