engine retarded manifold glowing red

what would happen if the engine was to far advanced ?

Paul TigerB6 - 20/4/08 at 10:47 PM

Pinking, possibly holed pistons etc. Basically the head would get very hot anyway

if its after you've driven it hard for a while then its nothing to worry about.

If its just doing it on idle then you need to get your engine checked out.

Get a timing light on it in some shape or form....

Too much advance causes at best pinking at worst detonation.

Also too much advance also causes difficult starting, hunting at idle speed and can cause over heating.

Too much advance would cause a loss in power because the pressure build up in the cylinder would happen before TDC. This would cause the engine to slow during the compression stroke. Advance the ignition even further and you risk bending conrods.

Honestly glowing manifolds are perfectly normal, especially the tubular ones. Gas temperature must be about 700-800degs, don't worry it's not going to melt

more worried about my £500 turbo.

If it's a Nissan turbo I wouldn't worry there tested well beyond what you'll ever see.

Dont worry about the Turbo - but do worry about the engine if you suspect your timing is considerably out. Well worth getting this right from the outset with a timing light etc as said. I borrowed one from the mechanic across the road and despite very carefully lining up the trigger wheel for the MJ, was still 3 degrees out initially

graememk - 21/4/08 at 11:42 AM

yes thats my worry that my trigger wheel is out

You will run into serious detonation long before that stage.
