new engine req for a book built xflow 7
steve m - 16/3/08 at 07:44 PM

I have been thinking about changing my outdated 1700 xflow in my locost , to something more modern, and unleaded

I do NOT want to go BEC, so must be a usable powerfull 1600 ish engine, with the possibilty of adding more power

problems,

crankshaft pully to top of engine (height) could be an issue, as even the xflow is a tight fit under the bonnet,

Exhaust prefered on the LHS

a normal type of engine, ie rover k

any idea's ?? prefrably with measurements !!

regards

steve

zetec?

Vauxhall?

What you doing with you old engine?

steve m - 16/3/08 at 07:56 PM

Zetec is to tall, at the front, assuming ive meausured correctly !!
Vauxhall ugh !!

the old xflows (3 in various states of build) will all go on fleebay, but not for a while as this may take a year to put the plan together

My car
<<<----- is Very low, to the ground, like me !! and also in usable engine height available

one option would be to sit the engine further back, assuming i can get a narrow gearbox, at present a ford type 9

my choice would be Zetec SE Engine (as used by shawspeed)

good for 150 BHP with modded intake and exhaust

shawspeed sell the bellhousing to fit to a type 9

I have a Zetec in a book built car with a Caterham nosecone. It is a tight fit , I cut the sump down level with the bellhousing and found that the timing belt cover was about 20mm higher than the nose cone and came about 25 mm in front of the bonnet lip with about 3.5 inches of ground clearance.
I debated ways of making it fit and nearly decided against fitting it, but eventually cut the nosecone to give clearance.
It was well worth doing and although I intend to make a scoop to fit over the cam cover i havent yet but the extra power was well worth the effort.
You could move the gearbox back to get the engine behind the nose cone and it would then be easy to sort the bonnet.
Paul.

2nd vote for the Zetec SE. They're actually lighter and smaller than a crossflow plus, as has already been said, getting 150bhp out of them isn't that expensive - and much much much cheaper than getting anything like that from a crossflow

If it's a book chassis, with standard nose etc. a Zetec fits with no chassis/body mods, bit of a squish, but definitely fits

Zetec SE loverly little alloy engine..

However for me a 2.0 zetec with a T35 turbo.. brrrrrrm. 400bhp pish woosh......

Taz Surfleet - 16/3/08 at 09:37 PM

pardon the ignorance but whats the differences between the SE and standard zetecs?

Schrodinger - 16/3/08 at 09:45 PM

LOTS
They are not remotely similar engines.
Zetec iron block inlet on drivers side exhaust on passenger side
SE alloy block inlet on passenger side exhaust on drivers side IIRC is also a joint venture with Toyota non standard gearbox fitting

Would be a 20V Toyota 4AGE for me!

anyone got any mneasurments from centre of crank to top of cam cover for the toyota and zetec se?

bob - 17/3/08 at 10:50 AM

Some zetec measurements,i'm sure someone will have some exact cambelt cover to chopped sump measurements.

This will help to go along with.

Also seadog (mark) is fitting a zetec SE into his indy, i know the dimensions of the indy chassis are bigger/taller but he should be able to give the engine measurements.

bugger the image is too big

Well worth considering this engine, I'm really surprised it isn't used more.
