Volvo 940 turbo charger, what's this lump?
mark chandler - 2/3/08 at 05:41 PM

Just picked up a turbo for my blade car, its off a 940 Volvo.

All is as I expect except it has an extra lump on it, it looks like an integral BOV as it has ducts to both before and after the fan. The waste gate is completely separate and looks normal.

Can anyone help.

Also what PSI do these run at?

Type is: TD04H-13C
Part no. 3547658

It looks like a internal dump valve. I have a similar thing on my turbo.

Looks like the same thing, have you bothered to add anything else to spill air on shutdown?

This had a small bore tube running to the inlet so I assume on overpressure it dumps the air (nice and quietly).

Yeah its an integral re-circ dump valve.

If you look down the compressor inducer you'll see where the air comes back in.

Good

So no need for anything else off Ebay, my £1 turbo feels nice and tight so locost all the way.

Just need to start welding up the manifold now.

wooooosh

When you close the throttle Vacuum opens the valve and helps stop turbine stalling.
I left mine disconnected and replaced ot with the one in the boost pipe in the picture Here

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Steve, do you have any airflow in and out of your intercooler or does it work enough without?

CBV , compressor bypass valve .

fit a blanking plate , and use a proper dump valve .

is that a 13c turbo ?

too small , need a 15g from a T5 .

Volvorsport - 2/3/08 at 07:58 PM

oh 4 or 7-8 ish psi dpending on the model you got it from

B230FT 8 psi
B230FK 4 psi

locoR1 - 2/3/08 at 07:59 PM

^^^^^^^^^^As he said Blanking plate on mine with a proper bump valve

And my turbo’s a 16g from a T5r a 15g should be about spot on for a blade if it’s a 13 I would agree to small.

mark chandler - 2/3/08 at 08:35 PM

Its going on a 893 blade, I do not want something huge on there, just want to up the power a bit + I,m bored so want to develop.

893's have smaller clutches than any of the later variants + gearboxes will be a little weaker, max power destroys evetything else down line.

That aside if it will push say 7psi then I,m more than happy

My air into the turbo comes in from the passenger footwell so is quite cool to start with, I have some louvres in my bonnet to let some of the hot air out, the turbo does not produce massive boost so all in all I dont have a heat issue.

Engine was FT, so 8psi... disco

Only £1 for the whole engine complete, unbolted this and put the rest in a skip!

Cheers Mark

Volvorsport - 2/3/08 at 10:47 PM

you put the rest in the skip - mileage year - would of got £50 for it - im looking for one too .

tbh ive put 5 blocks in the skip before xmas

mark chandler - 3/3/08 at 05:54 PM

Not quite skip, it had receipts for recondiioning a few years ago, £1,600 and the chap I purchased from said it was really good, he removed to keep then sold his car.

If you want it and can arrange carriage its yours.

Its a 2litre

Regards Mark
