Another Starter Motor Question MT75 Zetec
mongrelwestie - 8/8/07 at 03:57 PM

i have an MT75 gearbox attached to a 2.0 1993 Zetec with a 1.8 flywheel and clutch, i am trying to fit a LRS707 starter motor but it seems to be snug, do i have to mod the sump or do i need to try the LRS543 starter, any help would be very usefull.

Grind a small bit out of the sump

its a standard sump and has what looks like a casting mark that i could grind but even then i dont think the holes line up?

go get a valeo starter motor. its really compact and fits with about 1mm of sump ground off...

you must have a non standard sump then? or a dfferent engine?

Hi, I have copied below an extract from a Zetec to Mt75 build instruction. I am not sure what diference it would make, but you say you have LRS 707, this say's LR707. I dont have a Zetec, or an MT75, just a bloody big V6, and type9.

"The starter motor. on UK Zetecs its located, inlet manifold side of the engine at the LHS (engine is Transverse in Mondeo and Escort. The MT75 gearbox wants it to be on the other side. (exhaust manifold side) To accommodate this use a Lucas LR707 starter it's a simple bolt on fit".
Cheers Ray

On pre 1998 Zetecs (phase 1 & 2) a little metal needs to be removed from the sump to allow the starter to fit, the thinner the starter the better and it looks like the valeo would fit without any grinding.
On 1998 on (phase 3) Zetecs, the sump is in two parts with about a 100mm intermediate sump cast in ally, and a lower steel sump. A massive amount of ally needs removing from the intermediate sump to get a starter in with the MT75. I'm still trying to find a starter for my Phase 3 / MT75, but the valeo vs266 is top of the shopping list by a good stretch.
See Zetec-Cat website for tons of usefull Zetec info, not my site just a good ref.
Rgds.
Pete.
