Help with Pinto
matt_claydon - 13/8/03 at 03:04 PM

Hi,

I bought a Pinto engine (v. cheap), but it's missing some ignition system components and there's a few things on it that I can't identify:

What is this electrical connection near the exhaust port:

This three pin connector comes from the distributor, one wire is connected to the body, the other two go to a sensor (ringed). WHat should this connect to? Anyone got one?

What is this electrical connection?

On the carb there are two fittings I can't identify, one is electrical and the other is threaded:

The engine has this adaptor plate attached and what look's like a bigger flywheel than normal. The gearbox it came with (which I won't be using) also has a much larger bellhousing than the one I took out of my CVH sierra. Is this engine from a transit or something?

Have looked in the haynes manual, but nothing seems quite the same (maybe because it's not out of a sierra, although I was told it was. Many thanks for any help, if anyone has any of the bits I need for sale, please let me know.

Cheers,
Matt.

Hi there,

Top pic is the water temp sender and the 3rd pic is the oil pressure switch ( i think!) I have a T piece out of here with my low pressure light and my capillary guage attached.

Dont know the distributor connectors an the Carb on e on the left ion mine is attached to the sump breather ( again i thnk, not too sure on that) someone else please clarify.

Cheers
COlin

locoboy - 13/8/03 at 03:19 PM

maybe not for the sump breather pipe, it is for the water cooled inlet manifold.

bob - 13/8/03 at 03:56 PM

Its a different carb to mine, but pipes from inlet manifold are usually servo and water.
Sump breather pipe is usually underneath manifold, well it is on my weber anyhow.

Dizzy connects up to an ignition module which in turn conects up to coil with live taken from starter.

thats a transit engine, usually low compression,vv carb is only fit for the bin, adapter plate and flywheel will have to go

JoelP - 13/8/03 at 06:29 PM

The plug on the distributor connects to the wiring loom, obviously(!), it is the wires to the ign modukle that induce the coil to discharge, possibly called hall induction? somebody correct me if not...

did all the others get identified?

The two plugs on the block are oil pressure and water temp i think, my loom is beside me so gizza shout if you still stuck.

One of the plugs on the carb may be a choke warmer or similar, usually a blue wire from the altenator.

tother one on manifold if for the servo

bob - 13/8/03 at 06:34 PM

OK so the wires in the plug on the dizzy go tto the module,i tried in my best english

matt_claydon - 13/8/03 at 06:43 PM

Thanks for all the help guys.

Was going to fit twin carbs anyway, so not too worried about the carb. Looks like I need an ignition module, hopefully find one at a scrappy.

Guess if it's low compression then it will be pretty poo performance-wise. Maybe I should cut my losses and try to find another lump, what do you guys think?

Cheers,
Matt.

Sorry bob, i wasnt copying you! I didnt see you'd answered that bit! Yours was clearer than mine anyway!

bob - 13/8/03 at 07:16 PM

no problem joel i think matt has the answers now.

MATT
When you go the the breakers for the ign module make sure you get a plug for it as well with a few inches of wires on it.

I've got a pic of one in situ somewhere,if i can find it i'll mail it to you.
Ir if i get a camera here i'll take a shot of mine.

Peteff - 13/8/03 at 08:01 PM

Does it connect to one of these? I got this and a dizzy off a 'C' reg 2.0ltr Sierra and replaced the dizzy and big aluminium box on mine with it. Gets rid of a lot of stuff you don't need if it's the one and it's easier to wire.

yours, Pete.

Thats the exact pic i was looking for pete.

Matt
Get one of them and the plug that goes with it mate.
When your ready i'm sure one of us here will tell you where the wires go

P.s. get another dizzy cap 'cause it looks like that is knackered too....

JoelP - 13/8/03 at 10:37 PM

Anyone addressed his low compression issues yet?!? May as well tell him its shite if it is! I dont have a clue myself. conrod?

david walker - 14/8/03 at 08:17 PM

Will also have a 1600 cam in it.

matt_claydon - 14/8/03 at 09:15 PM

Is there a definitive way I can tell what this engine was /originally/ from? Could I tell from the camshaft or something else, or do I need to phone ford up with the engine number? ANyone got the phone number I need?

Thanks for all the help,
Matt.

0906 5533447

Give them eng number and they will tell you when it was made and what it was 1st in.

If you want it in writing for emisions at SVA you have to write to them.

tranny engines normally have a harder life than car engines so best look for a seirra, plenty still around, you also get all the bits you need instead of searching scrappies and paying over the odds

dave blissett - 15/8/03 at 07:54 PM

the transit engine has low compresion pistons ie the height from the pin to the top of the piston is shorter than on a high compression car engine piston heights high comp (9.2) 41.65mm
low comp (8.2) 40.35mm
hope this helps
all the best dave
