which turbo?
Julian B - 2/4/07 at 07:44 PM

Hi

Im trying to find out which production cars run a Garret T3-60 or super 60

I,m trying to get two identical units for a rover v8 so finding a production car that uses them would help

Cheers

Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but Simon on here has used two Audi S3 turbos with his Rover v8.

Escort RS Turbos run t3s - dont know about trim though.

James,

Nearly right - S4

Julian,

My choice was simple. Find a car that uses a pair of turbos, for which the numbers stack up. My calcs were quite simple - Audi 2.7 revs to about 6 and a half krpm, R V8 (3.5l)to 5500. R V8 is 1.29 x Audi. Nearly 1.3 times the revs of the Audi.

If they turn out to be too small, I'll get a pair of KKK04's, rather than the 03's

The other thing was, I got a pair of low mile turbos for a £120 plus postage

It's not working yet, but hopefully within a month or so!

I got a pair of Renault 5 turbo intercoolers for a fiver each, though I've only used the
cores and made new ends from ally.

I would suggest strongly that you think about a single turbo. It's taken me about 4 months longer than anticipated.

why a pair? im using a holset hx35 single with a manifold from boost performance ,lighter ,simpler and can handle much more boost than a pair of smaller units Rescued attachment carbs 006.jpg

less lag?

Julian B - 3/4/07 at 07:17 PM

Yes lag is the killer

V8 or V6's are best suited to twin turbo installations although i think jan-speed used to do a single turbo kit for the rv8

Did you see the top gear bit on the new Evo. It was out accelerated by a desil runaround. all because of lag

If you read the books and are able to decipher compresser maps you soon find out that getting a matched turbo isnt difficult, but it can be expensive. If you get it right you can beat the lag and have loads low down torque.

I will keep trying.

I might have to look at some other makes

i think a small holset would spool fine on a 3.5 litre v8 , we use them on 2.3 litres .

only super 60 trim that i know of is either a mustang from the states or a cossie

froggy - 4/4/07 at 06:28 PM

swings and roundabouts though big turbo means lower charge temps and you can run reasonable static c/r. look at what the yanks do to the v6 mustangs and a single hx35 before dissmissing it. twins may spool up quicker but the rover is hardly lacking in low end torque to start with. the holset has loads of different trim options that are pretty dirt cheap so modding a standard hx is peanuts compared to petrol units . a brand new 35 with integral wastegate is under £300 and can push up to 30psi on a 4 litre petrol unit without any hassle, there are smaller units in the hx range but the 35 is a good match for my 4.0 lump

Im not familiar with " holset " can you give more info

The holsets are commonly used on the dodge TD pickups and are commonly upgraded so they come available for sale in good condtion. Very durable and capable of huge boost at good temps. Lots of guys running the ford 2.3 engine like mine run them, some of them insane boost levels as well- over 30 lbs and pushing way over 400 hp
