which is inlet from tank and which one is outlet to carbs thanx.and does it have to be upright or can it sit horizontal

No1 is the inlet No2 is the outlet

There's a flow arrow on the fuel filter which gives you a clue. Pump will work OK up front under the hood & will give better access than sticking it in the boot next to the tank.
