Starter motor
iscmatt - 11/11/06 at 02:15 PM

Another problem! I cant get it to start! The starter motor turns but doesnt appear to engage the flywheel. I have tested it is working by taking it out and having a look, everything is fine. My thinking is perhaps i have the wrong starter motor. i have a type 9 gear box and pinto 2.0 engine. Can anybody tell from the pictures if this is the right starter motor? it is p[ossible that the the starter motor came from an MT75 gearbox (are they different?)

Please help!! i want to get my 7 going! Rescued attachment 103_3206.JPG

Have you checked the solenoid on the side of the starter?
It throws the cog outwards when you turn the starter over.

yes it works, the cog jumps out and whizzes round, but doesnt hit the flywheel

It looks like you may have the wrong starter. Do you know what it came off.

I believe that the starter off the 1.8 Sierra is different. I think it may have a shorter throw.

I will be taking mine out in a couple of weeks as I start the engine swap. I can post a photo then of measurements but hopefully someone can provide a picture sooner..

For now I would suggest removing the startere and connecting it with a couple of jump leads just to ensure that when it spins it is also being throw out by the yoke.

Might be a deal to be done there then as I will shortly need one for a CVH. I have one lined up but a spare is always good.

I will have the one off my Pinto available in a couple of weeks.

in reply to your previous post it all works, i connected it with leads etc and it jumps and spins so it is in working order!

The starter that fits a dohc engine fitted to a mt75 box can have the nose removed and fitted to a starter that comes of a pinto engine to type9 box . this what i had to do to get it to work Jacko
ps were do you live near York?

Here's the starter off my donor which had a Pinto and type 9 in it. Pinion looks in a different position. Rescued attachment Pinto starter.JPG

Thats what this starter motor is from i think, a 2.0dohc with mt75 box. live half way between york and malton

it looks like the starter from that pinto has an extra 1/2" throwon the pinion which would explain the lack of engage when starting
