But that makes it spin the wrong way, granted it shouldn't affect charging, but it won't cool very well.

And the brushes probably aren't designed to run both ways and will wear quicker.

as others have said, it will run in the opposite direction.

I am sure I have seen somewhere that it won't work but from what I canremember bbout rotating electrical machines, I cannot see why not.

that looks like a lucas 1a27 or similar - I am pretty sure the brushes and commutator are symmetrical so I see no issues there.

About the fan; should be possible to flip ir round but would need spacers for the pulley so the spinlde may be too short for that.

I am curious if you have you had it running?

--------- slight off topic - has anyone used a bike alternator on a car? I don't know much about them but think they are driven by a gear - so it should be possible to fit a pulley onto one?

If it was flipped around it wouldn't cool at all as the fins would be facing away from the cooling vents (it's a centrifugal fan). It's probably perfectly up to the job like that anway, Locosts hardly have a demanding electrical system.

it will run just as well backwards as forwards.
No brush wear issues (checked with alt. referb. company)
With regards to cooling, the most demanding load on the car is the headlights, & I don't intend to do a lot of night driving
